This 1977 live album from the seminal hard-rocking girlband The Runaways boasts "You Drive Me Wild" and "All Right You Guys" among its 12 cuts.
Because the Runaways were much better known in Japan than the U.S., it stands to reason that their only live album was recorded in that country. This hard to find LP was available in the U.S. only as a Japanese import and sold for around ten to 12 dollars, which was a lot to pay for vinyl in the late '70s. But American Runaways fans who were willing to make that investment found a lot to admire about the album, which boasted superior sound quality (by '70s standards) and explosive, uninhibited versions of "You Drive Me Wild," "Cherry Bomb," "California Paradise," and other hard rock pearls. The original Runaways lineup (Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox, and Sandy West) was still in place, and the rockers' primary focus is on material from The Runaways and Queens of Noise. Holding nothing back, Ford is at her most metallic. Except for a handful of bootlegs, Live in Japan is the only documentation of the Runaways on stage. ~ Alex Henderson
"Perhaps the very best from an era of classic rock live albums. Includes essential tracks `I Wonder Where The Boys Are' and `All Right You Guys', not on the studio LPs" Robert Coyne, Rock, The Rough Guide. Originally not released in the UK or US, Live In Japan was recorded in 1977 during the girls sold out arena tour! The Runaways had become genuine superstars in Japan and this album boasts superior sound quality (by '70s standards) and explosive, uninhibited versions of "You Drive Me Wild," "Cherry Bomb," "California Paradise," and other hard rock pearls. With the line up still the same, just before Jackie and then Cherrie were to leave the band the girls were on top form, making this one of the best live rock albums of the 1970s! Except for a handful of bootlegs, Live in Japan is the only documentation of the Runaways on stage!

Joan Moves Up The first album released after lead vocalist Cherie Currie has Joan Jett handling all lead vocals. The overall sound is pared back from the first album and, thanks to Lita Ford's guitar work, harder in quality. It's closer to Lita's heavy sound than the direction Joan took it. Good effort, but doesn't quite blend in with their other releases. Submitted by lexigene (DuBois, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Glory Days Revisited For fans of Joan Jett and/or her previous group, The Runaways, this is an excellent live recording of them at their peak just before that group split up. The CD sound more than matches the vinyl and, along with more liner notes, every photo is reproduced...including the full length gatefold cover. Live In Japan
$15.09 Of all the studio albums that the Runaways recorded in the late 1970s, And Now... The Runaways is the least essential. This isn't to say that And Now is a bad album; it's generally decent, if uneven, but it certainly isn't in a class with such gems as The Runaways, Queens of Noise and Waiting for the Night. Recorded in 1978, it offers the same lineup heard on 1977's Waiting for the Night: Original members Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Sandy West were still on board, but singer Cherie Currie was gone and Vicki Blue had replaced original bassist Jackie Fox. This recording marked the first time that a Runaways album wasn't produced or co-produced by Kim Fowley; John Alcock is the producer, and ...

Live In Japan
$16.19 A huge improvement over the fine but slightly awkward self-titled debut, QUEENS OF NOISE finds the Runaways taking a stronger hand in the songwriting, with co-producer Earle Mankey (Sparks, Concrete Blonde) bringing the overall sound more in line with the burgeoning punk movement than the glitter-rock vibe of the first album. More importantly, QUEENS OF NOISE is the album on which guitarist Joan Jett asserts herself as the leader of the band, writing two of the album's best songs, "Take It Or Leave It" and the sexy "I Love Playing With Fire," and taking over lead vocals from ...

Live In Japan
$16.29 Although there's no getting around the scent of exploitation that surrounds the Runaways--their mastermind Kim Fowley would probably take a certain quiet pride in being referred to as one of the great rock & roll charlatans--THE RUNAWAYS is a much better album than most people thought it was at the time. It's a mistake, however, to think of it as a punk album, as it's occasionally identified: while there's a dash of Ramones in these crunchy two-minute slices of hard rock, there's a lot more Cheap Trick (in the sarcastic lyrics) and AC/DC (in Lita Ford's no-bull guitar leads). "You Drive Me Wild" and "Secrets" cover the two ...
| | Runaways Waitin For The Night CD (1977) (Import) United Kingdom
Live In Japan
$16.25 WAITIN' FOR THE NIGHT features 10 tracks by the all-girl proto-punk band.
Cherie Currie's departure was a major loss for the Runaways, but it was hardly a fatal blow. The female hard rockers still had a gem of a singer in Joan Jett and a captivating guitarist in Lita Ford, and they continued to offer sneering, in-your-face rock & roll on their third album, Waitin' for the Night. This LP isn't quite as strong as Queens of Noise, but is excellent, gutsy, and inspired nonetheless. From the jaded "Little Sister" to the catchy "Wait for Me," Night proved that there was indeed life after Cherie Currie for the Runaways. Night did well in Japan, though in the U.S., the ladies of loudness still couldn't break through commercially. This band was definitely way ahead of its time, and it can't be stressed enough that everyone from Girlschool to Babes in Toyland, 7 Year Bitch, and L7 owes the risk-taking but ...

| | Edgeplay - A Film About The Runaways DVD (2004) Full Frame
Live In Japan
$15.09 Carefully packaged and groomed for success, The Runaways built an image for themselves out of their consciously trashy costumes, frank lyrics, and straightforward, hard-rocking sound. Closely managed by the industry-savvy Kim Fowley, they were also accused of being a gimmick, and the fact that a few of them were still learning how to play their instruments didn't do much to dissuade this notion. ...
