| | Back To The Crossroads: The Roots Of Robert Johnson CD
In a day and time (post-2000) when tribute albums spring up before a singer has a chance to die, much less become an immortal, it's a relief to get an album that switches the formula. Back to the Crossroads traces the roots -- not the influence -- of Robert Johnson, perhaps the most eulogized singer in blues history. These roots are especially interesting to the rock fan who initially came to Johnson by way of Cream or Eric Clapton or the Allman Brothers, because they show how much the guitarist borrowed, adapted, and synthesized the music of those who came before him. As Elijah Wald points out in the liner notes, Robert Johnson copied Lonnie Johnson's vocal and instrumental arrangement of "Life Saver Blues" almost note for note on "Malted Milk" and "Drunken Hearted Man." Indeed, for those unfamiliar with Lonnie Johnson, it would be easy to guess that he was an urban knockoff of the Delta bluesman. A number of Robert Johnson's vocal inflections can also be traced to Peetie Wheatstraw's delightful "Police Station Blues." The point of the collection, though, isn't to prove that Johnson was a derivative artist, but to outline the rich tradition that he drew from to create his own art. As with other Yazoo compilations, research and sound engineering guarantee a high-quality product with historical significance. Back to the Crossroads also accompanies Elijah Wald's Escaping the Delta: Robert Johnson and the Invention of the Blues. Any fan of pre-WWII blues will want to pick up a copy of Back to the Crossroads. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Throughout the '80s, Robert Cray and Stevie Ray Vaughan were heralded as the "new hopes" for the blues. Although Vaughan's fiery blues-based playing made this sobriquet more appropriate, Cray's style took as much from Memphis soul as it did Chicago blues. HEAVY PICKS compiles the cream of Cray's material released between 1980 and 1997.
Combining a fluid guitar sound and a creamy vocal style, Robert Cray wrote music often based on the fragility of relationships between ...

It's especially rewarding since Williams -- whose work you hear on early Howlin' Wolf, Otis Spann, Bo Diddley, Billy Boy Arnold (who guests here) ...

$21.85 Hossein ALIZADEH / Madjid KHALADJIRAN: MASTERS OF IMPROVISATIONPersian music: improvisations in the Esfahan modeThe modes in Persian music follow complex and diverse rules. Thus, during an improvisation, the musician can hardly anticipate the nature of the expression sought for. It is only on the spot in the presence of an audience that this expression can come about. Without an audience such a phenomenon certainly requires much more strength and concentration from the interpreter. The very conception of the different modes in Persian music is the fruit of various states of inner feelings. From dawn to dusk, we experience a multitude of emotions that can be expressed through a peculiar mode. The number of modes twelve like the twelve months of the year as well as the different melodic sequences arising from them, contribute to this phenomenon. With their more or less symmetrical intervals, the tempered modes (such as Segah, Shur and Nava) bring about a state of calm and concentration, while others (such as Tchahargah) do not follow these criteria of equilibrium but engender a feeling of movement and agitation. There are also modes expressing something ...
