| | No. 1 Smooth Jazz Radio Hits! CD (1 Customer Review)
No. 1 Smooth Jazz Radio Hits is a ten-song collection of mellow and thoroughly modern jazz sounds featuring some of the big-name artists recording for Shanachie and Narada Jazz. Most of the tracks, like Chieli Minucci's "My Girl Sunday," Chuck Loeb's "Sarao," and Kim Waters' "Waterfall," get bogged down in overly programmed rhythms and bland, clichéd dance music atmospherics and are nothing but the kind of background music you are likely to hear while on hold with the power company. A couple of the tracks manage to escape the gloom by delving deeply into the funky end of smooth jazz: the Urban Knights' bubbling cover of R&B staple "Hi-Heel Sneakers" and Nestor Torres' grooving take on Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" are fun and almost exciting. Strip away the synths and they might even pass for jazz. ~ Tim Sendra

| | Famous Last Words CD (2003)
No. 1 Smooth Jazz Radio Hits!
$11.15 Famous Last Words' 2003 self-titled debut reveals that the trio of Jeff Zittrain (guitars/vocals/keyboards/mouth harp), Kate Burkart (bass/vocals), and Jace Bartulis (drums) simultaneously embrace if not adopt their jam band roots -- they are from the Bay Area after all -- while thankfully foregoing all the embarrassing musical clichés and dead ends that ironically define the subgenre. Even as the majority of the cuts clock in past the seven-minute mark, there are few, if any, meandering interludes. In fact the contrary is most often the case, as the primary compositional combo of Zittrain and Burkart weave a fulfilling sonic tapestry of unsheltered emotion and instrumental prowess. The opening and ambling "Lullaby" is far from a sleeper, perfectly demonstrating Zittrain's incisive lead fretwork, which at times recalls an inspired Neil Young. The vocal pairing yields an undeniable synchronicity, especially during the chorus of the driving rocker "Matter of Time," or by contrast the standout "Sloe Hank," lending itself well to the intimate acoustic environs. "Faith in the Dark" is a trippy and slightly noir excursion, examining the extent of the band's improvisational proficiency and sporting some of the effort's most intuitive interaction. Particularly tasty is Zittrain's understated ...

| | Margareds' Kingdom Of Patience CD (2008) (Import)
No. 1 Smooth Jazz Radio Hits!
$18.55 The Margareds’ first album is a phenomenon which is difficult to be described. When you hear its first sounds you will feel an incredible dose of esthetic elegance which irrespective of how the situation is changing will make you listen to it patiently till the end. And that’s ok because it is the key to discover what Margareds’ music is really like. Why is the content of the album worth being treated carefully? Because it contains 13 carefully polished up songs. Anybody who approaches music and only looks forward to an immediate increase of dopamine will be disappointed. The whole album is structurally at the similar level of expression. Listening to it you won’t hear any sudden changes of the tempo and main parts being like a black spot on a white piece of a paper. Everything in here which is the tastiest is hidden in nooks and crannies. ...
