With a lineage that includes such doom-filled heavy hitters as Scream, Wool, Goatsnake, and the Desert Sessions, the uplifting, mellow collection of summer psych pop on Dandy Brown's second Orquesta del Desierto outing is somewhat unexpected. There does seem to be a commonality in texture and production between Dos and albums from quintessential Palm Desert bands like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. And, even if they don't fall under the rubric of heavy stoner rock, Brown's outfit certainly sounds pretty baked. But OdD combines '60s psychedelia, Creedence, the Meat Puppets, and Latin-tinged acoustic pop in their vision of sun-drenched desert rock. Listeners are unlikely to find a song as propulsive and overpoweringly happy as the decidedly California-circa-1968, Wall of Sound number "Summer" -- that is unless it's on a Jayhawks record. "Rope" sounds like "Black Hole Sun"-era Soundgarden had they grown up happy Deadheads. And "Someday" is a sprawling psychedelic number that could easily fit onto the Meat Puppets' Up on the Sun. Dos turns out to be a perfect and idiosyncratic record that beautifully captures a facet of Southern California and defines a new type of music in the process. The more you listen to it, the more the Palm Desert connection makes sense. Dos is like the acoustic numbers on Led Zeppelin III -- hardly heavy, but still in the same spirit -- making Orquesta del Desierto the Zeppelin III of the land of scorched earth and sand. ~ Charles Spano

$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
DOS CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering ...

DOS music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the ...
| | Mark Lanegan Bubblegum CD (2004)
DOS songs
$12.49 In between the release of FIELD SONGS and its follow-up, BUBBLEGUM, former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan sang for hard-rock heroes both old (a reunited MC5) and new (Queens of the Stone Age), gaining both fans and famous friends in the process. Thus, all eyes were on Lanegan for BUBBLEGUM, which features guest shots by everyone from PJ Harvey and Queens leader Josh Homme to Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses. Fortunately, all this attention doesn't seem to have fazed the sandpaper-voiced singer; despite the guest list, BUBBLEGUM is as dirty, gritty, and raw as anything in his catalog.
While much of Lanegan's previous solo work is a mix of languid folk-rock, gutter blues, and the kind of grunge-mutated 1960s-psych influences that powered the Screaming Trees, BUBBLEGUM is lean, angular, and occasionally almost avant-garde. Simple, driving, Stooges-like riffs ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
DOS album
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another ...

| | Manowar Kings Of Metal CD (1988)
DOS songs
$8.69 On their anthemic mission statement "Kings of Metal" Manowar once again proclaim their metal superiority thusly: "Other bands play, Manowar kills." The twin sentiments of the group's metal mastery and the majesty of medieval heroism in battle are repeated on their sixth full-length release, Kings of Metal. There aren't too many surprises on the disc, with the possible exception of bassist Joey DeMaio's blinding 64th-note bass playing on a reworking of Russian classicist Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" entitled "Sting of the Bumblebee." Considered by some fans to be a classic of its own, the 1988 release has quite a few ballads, ...

| | October File Holy Armour From The Jaws Of CD (2007)
DOS music CDs
$12.49 No one has ever mistaken October File for easy listening, and it is a safe bet that no one ever will. Holy Armour from the Jaws of God favors a blistering, scorching approach to hardcore, alternative metal, and alternative rock, and the influences that have served these Brits well in the past -- including Killing Joke, Ministry, Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys, and Sepultura -- continue to serve them well on this 2007 recording. The songs on Holy Armour from the Jaws of God tend to be very sociopolitical; religion, war, and environmental problems are among the topics that October File address, and they are addressed with all of scalding anger that one expects from hardcore-minded ...
