30 is a seemingly effortless blend of classic Chicago jacking house with minimalistic acid funk and the occasional detour into trip-hop and ambient house. Enhanced by Laurent Garnier's longtime DJ work, the superb mix and feel for what should come next inform production skills to an incredible degree. The single "Crispy Bacon" is one of the seminal moments in the history of acid, while "Sweet Mellow D" and the mid-tempo "For Max" provide other highlights. The superb jacking theme "The Hoe" and "Flashback" (dedicated to the recently deceased Armando) are two of the more overtly Chicago-inspired tracks, but 30 is a stunning album throughout. ~ John Bush

Spin (8/97, p.115) - 6 (out of 10) - "...his sound-effect intermissions (stylus static, phone tones, voice-mail messages) are cute, and he's got tricks up his sleeve....[Garnier] can make your head spin 1988 acid-house style while you spin on your head 1982 breakdance style..." Q (4/97, p.122) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...sometimes dazzling, sometimes dark and often disturbing." 30 Review

| | Julie Miller Broken Things CD (1999)
30 music CDs
$10.89 Julie Miller is a rarity among singer-songwriters. Her songs are eminently cover-able and have widely been afforded such treatment. But they are also so personal that they seem to be rolling out of her heart when she sings them. BROKEN THINGS is the follow-up to BLUE PONY, Miller's stunning 1997 debut. Guests include Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, and NRBQ's Joey Spampinato. The album was produced by Julie and her husband Buddy Miller (whose own CRUEL MOON was released nearly simultaneously).
As a singer, Miller can embrace a spiritual realm rich with introspection ("I Know Why the River Runs"). She can also kick things up with a sassy edge, as she does here on "I Need You." The set's one cover is a version of the traditional ballad "Two Soldiers." The narrow programming of radio in the '90s is no barometer of the important music being produced. Like Earle and Harris, Julie Miller simply makes good music. This is a stellar release.
Recorded between February & May 1999.

| | Eddie Angel Meets The Beatles CD (2005)
30 music CDs
$12.89 The title of this album might lead one to believe that Eddie Angel, guitar hero of masked rock & roll instrumentalists los Straitjackets, was trying his hand at a crop of Beatles covers, but that's not the case. Eddie Angel Meets the Beatles is a covers album, but it's actually songs from the Beatles' set list in their early club days -- that is, tunes that were actually covered by the young group itself. For fans of Angel, this also marks a significant event in that the renowned instrumentalist actually takes lead vocals throughout the album, conjuring up the raw, rathskeller-throated style of Hamburg-era John Lennon. (With the exception of a vocal turn on the 2002 album Dressed in Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash, Angel usually lets his guitar do the singing.) This is an album that shimmies, shakes, rocks, rolls, even swoons (into loungy '50s-style balladry). Most significantly, Angel is a ringer on guitar. Back in the day, George Harrison was able to pull off Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry riffs, but Angel, now in his fifties, has evolved to the point where he's practically transcended guitar influences like Link Wray, Chuck Berry, and the Ventures' Nokie Edwards. He's also more than ably backed by Rochester, NY, rock & roll revivalists the Hi-Risers (who offered up a stunning mix of garage, surf, Bobby Fuller Four-isms and Bakersfield twang on their 2003 album Lost Weekend). With relatively lo-fi, analogue-sounding production and dead-perfect feel and musicianship, this album captures the raw, youthful excitement of the early Fab Four. You might even forget you're not listening to the Liverpudlians ...
