Screen musical superstar Alice Faye had spurned Hollywood at the peak of her career some 27 years ago, and then had retired from showbiz all together when her run on radio with husband Phil Harris ended in 1954. What, then, could coax her out of retirement? Well, a chance to star in the 1962 remake of State Fair with Pat Boone, Bobby Darin and Ann-Margret, for one, but we suspect an equally important factor was a chance to make a record for Frank Sinatra's new Reprise label with master arranger Neal Hefti! Hefti lends a light, contemporary touch to the classic musical numbers on this record, while Alice's voice is warmer than ever, with a deeper, more burnished tone. It was quite the comeback then, it's a delightful Collectors' Choice Music exclusive now! 2003.
Personnel includes: Neal Hefti (arranger, conductor).

Throughout his career, Tony Bennett has managed to be both a singer's singer and a first rate entertainer--not nearly as easy as it sounds. Though blessed with a beautiful natural timbre, Bennett doesn't settle for merely caressing our eardrums. A popular singer by definition, Bennett's style is informed by jazz phrasing and rhythm. And while mostly known for the heart he brings to his material, there is also ample evidence of nuanced thinking going into what comes out.
On this excellent collection that highlights his recordings for Columbia spanning five decades, Bennett's famous ardor and aesthetic honesty are omnipresent. ...
| | Steve Tyrell Standard Time CD (2001)
Sings Her Famous Movie Hits
$7.15 The Warehouse, Sear Sound, The Hit Factory and David Horowitz Music, New York, New York.
Steve Tyrell has had a long journeyman's career in the music business, serving as record company executive, songwriter, and producer. But no one could have predicted the twist his career took in the late '90s. After he sang standards on the soundtracks of the films Father of the Bride (1991) and Father of the Bride 2 (1995), he was signed up by Atlantic Records to make an album of similar material. A New Standard (1999), his debut album, was a sleeper, such that Atlantic cut him loose, but it was still in the traditional jazz charts two years after its release. Tyrell had joined a new wave of retro singers like Diana Krall and Jane Monheit, reinterpreting the same batch of interwar songs that traditional pop singers have been performing regularly since the 1950s. Columbia Records scooped him up, and Standard Time is more of the same. Hailing from Houston, Tyrell has the same Deep South/Southwest accent and the same raspy vocal tone as Dr. John and Leon Russell. His performances, accompanied by a small jazz band occasionally augmented by a small string ...
| | Very Best Of Marc Antoine CD (2003)
Sings Her Famous Movie Hits
$8.39 Recorded between 1994 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Jonathan Widran.
Though his simplistic arrangements and often-repeated themes mark him as an artist more likely to be heard in an elevator than a jukebox, Marc Antoine is among the best of the mood music merchants active during the '90s and 2000s. A soft-toned player of the Spanish guitar, Antoine has a gift for intricate yet non-complex playing as well as strong melodies, and his compositions occasionally reveal a surprising depth (if only he'd delegate the drum-programming duties to someone beside himself). This 12-track collection, The Very Best of Marc Antoine, spans five of his LPs for GRP, beginning with "Latin Quarter," (far and away his best performance). None of the rest rise above the level of Muzak, though the addition of live drummer Lil' John Roberts for "On the Strip" makes a big difference, and Antoine summons a bit of magic for the ...
| | Animals Retrospective CD (2004)
Sings Her Famous Movie Hits
$13.65 Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi and Jody Klein, shows the tough, uncompromising use to which the Animals put their American influences. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" is recast as a raw garage rocker glazed with Alan Price's sinister organ riffs, and the aforementioned "House of the Rising Sun" is transformed from ...
