Tatsuya Yoshida, drummer of Japan's most infamous duo, the Ruins, engages the fiery pyrotechnics of free jazz pianist and composer Satoko Fujii on Erans. Far from a free-for-all freakout, this is a highly stylized series of 12 compositions that showcases the duo's near symbiotic relationship to tempo, dynamic, and chromatic engagement. In some senses, these pieces feel more like exercises, because they are played with such precision, which is both the album's strong point, and its weakness. There is a beautiful linguistic interplay here, one that is delicately shrouded in tone and explosive mechanisms, but these are overshadowed by sheer propulsion. From the manic shifts in tempo to the stylistically charged arpeggiattic studies, the listener gets lost in the fiery exchange of languages that exist between these shimmering, skittering dances of not one, but two percussionists, elementally creating and destroying intricately created tonal architectures over and over again for an hour. Certainly it is enthralling, but it is also exhausting to witness and pay close attention to at one stretch. There is an awful lot going on here, more than the ear can accommodate on one or two listens to be sure, let alone by taking the entire thing in one sitting. ~ Thom Jurek

Filmmaker Werner Herzog commissioned legendary guitarist Richard Thompson to compose and perform the musical score for his documentary Grizzly Man, about the life and death of Timothy Treadwell, a man who fled society to live among the grizzly bears in the Alaskan wilderness. In the manner of Thompson's previous film scores, the Grizzly Man album is longer on atmosphere than ...

Dirty Fingers
Gary Moore Dirty Fingers CD  (1984) Remastered

Erans album
CD $9.99  4 stars Audio Samples
Although he'd probably beg to disagree, Gary Moore's worst enemy throughout his career has arguably been his own eclecticism; a distinct lack of focus which has regularly seen him swinging back and forth between the roles of heavy metal guitar hero and blues purist (and everything in between: Irish folk music, jazz fusion, you name it). And while the second half of his career saw him capable of focusing on both the blues and hard rock/metal with some consistency, 1984's Dirty Fingers is very much a document of those early, restless years. Originally recorded in 1980 but shelved in deference to the far more radio-oriented material released in its stead as the one-off G Force album that same year (yes, another detour by Moore), Dirty Fingers' tracks are generally characterized by a raw, uncompromising heavy rock aesthetic -- hence the title. As such, tough, virile rockers invariably slathered in frenetic six-string fretwork abound (see "Hiroshima," "Kidnapped" "Lonely Night") but, with the exception of the unapologetically nasty "Run to Your Mama," these tend to fall well short of the material heard on 1979's Back on the Streets and its "official" ...

James Moody 1950-1951 CD  (2002) Import

Erans CD music
CD $13.85
April in Paris, 1950. James Moody is making records with a band led by trumpeter Ernie Royal. While two originals by Royal are based on textbook bop themes, Moody's own "Date With Kate" shows greater depth of invention. "Mean to Me" prances at a healthy clip and "Embraceable You" is presented as a slow-dance delicacy. Jumping to July of 1950, Moody leads his own "Boptet" through four remarkable exercises in modernity. Marshall "Red" Allen, who subsequently worked for decades with Sun Ra, is heard in Moody's band playing alto saxophone. These must be Allen's earliest appearances on record. "Delooney" surges ahead with peculiar chords that do in fact slightly resemble what Ra's Arkestra would be playing by 1957. "Real Cool" features the celeste and piano of Raymond Fol and some lovely bass work by Buddy Banks. "In the Anna" is a slow and harmonically altered stroll through "Back Home Again in Indiana." Moody sings a chorus of rapid-fire bop scat on "Voila." After he blows his horn for a bit, several voices sing a background chorus, which continues during a fadeout, that new effect just beginning to occur on records in 1950. Moody's last Parisian session focuses tightly upon his tenor sax backed by apparent Bud Powell devotee Raphael "Raph" Schecroun, Pierre Michelot, and the amazing ...

Erans music CDs
CD $19.79  5 stars
Superbi was the ninth album by the Beautiful South, eleven if you count two different greatest-hits packages, produced by former Tears for Fears keyboardist, Ian Stanley. For nearly two decades, they had been winning sales by singing melancholy, bittersweet love songs with a twist, lyrics that never quite added up to straightforward boy meets girl, and here was more of the same. Why change a winning formula, even when it's ceased to be so winning? Had they been around at the time, none of ...
