30 Banjo Classics album

Although it omits three songs from the far less comprehensive (and deleted) 1983 12-track Best Of, and doesn't include any live or post-A&M music, this 2000 release stands as the final word on the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' career. ...

| | Woody Guthrie Folk Collection CDs (2003)
30 Banjo Classics songs
$19.99 A two-disc set, Woody Guthrie's The Folk Collection contains a lot of the songs that are associated with the revered singer, like "Buffalo Skinners," "Pretty Boy Floyd," "House of the Rising Sun," and "John Henry" (which actually appears twice, once as a solo and once as a duet with Cisco Houston). There are many omissions as well (most noticeably "This Land Is Your Land," "Hard, Ain't It Hard," and "Do-Re-Mi"), but they are tempered by the addition of a few harder-to-find tracks ("Brown Eyes," "Ride Old Paint," both of which are performed again with Houston), which makes The Folk Collection a pretty decent combination of the well-known with lesser-known. ~ Marisa Brown
Starting in April 1944, Woody Guthrie did a series of casually organized recording sessions ...

| | Daniel Lee Martin On My Way To You CD (2007)
30 Banjo Classics songs
$12.65 The opening cut of On My Way to You, "Stark Ravin Crazy in Love," is an upbeat country stomper, that -- despite having been released on an independent label -- sounds a lot like mainstream country. The second cut, "Moonshine Mama," tells the story of a woman who, as can only happen in country music, is actually named Moonshine Mama and who actually makes moonshine. Dobro gives "Moonshine Mama" a rootsy kick-off before heavy guitar and percussion ratchet up the volume level. While the lyrics of both songs may be too cute for their own good, Daniel Lee Martin delivers them well. He even knows how to deliver slower ballads like "You Know Me," and mid-tempo fare like "Roll on By." Overall, the production is very even-handed, and the overall sound, country with a big dose of rock guitar, would work well on CMT and popular country radio. Martin even takes a trip back to the '70s, offering a restrained version of John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads." In fact, it's one of the more reserved tracks on the album. There is also a less successful version of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," which basically sounds thrown together. Overall, though, On My Way to You successfully co-opts a solid mainstream country sound. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
In the summer of 1997, this former advertising executive [from New Port Richey, FL] left all he ever knew to pursue his heart 'n soul dream... to make his mark and ink his name in the country music history books. After spending just a few short years in Music City USA, this singer/songwriter slowly came to the conclusion that he didn't quite fit the major label mold...and he knew himself well enough to know that being told what kind of music he should sing, how he should walk or talk, what he should wear, or the crowd he should be hanging out with wasn't going to fit his character. Daniel Lee knew exactly who he was way before he arrived in Music City, and that would be the very reason for his success. His story is simply amazing... In March of 1996, Daniel Lee Martin was at the top of his game. A CEO and owner of a successful twelve-year old advertising agency, he handled accounts from local independent businesses to Fortune 500 companies. It looked as though his future was already scripted. His reputation for his business savvy preceded him. Daniel Lee was invited to become a member of the planning committee for one of Florida's biggest events, The Chasco Fiesta. He was appointed marketing director and handled the day-to-day marketing and advertising decisions that were crucial in making the event what it is today. Weeks before the final day of the fiesta and the country concert [that brings 5,000 country music fans in from across the state], the committee realized that securing an opening act for the concert had been overlooked. Just as quick as panic set in, one of the board members suggested they book Daniel Lee Martin to perform as the opening act. [Sidebar: At ...
