The CIA recruits desperado El Mariachi to stop a drug kingpin's plot to kill the president.Stars Antonio Banderas, Selma Hayek, Johnny Depp. Special DVD features include a Robert Rodriguez audio commentary, ten-minute flick school, inside Troublemaker Studios, deleted scenes, lots more. With ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez follows the further adventures of El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), the guitar-and-gunslinging hero who has been leading a quiet life, but longs to get revenge for the murder of his love (Salma Hayek). When quirky CIA agent Sands (Johnny Depp) roots out El Mariachi for a special assignment, he comes out with pistols blazing. Soon, a retired FBI agent (Ruben Blades), a drug kingpin (Willem Dafoe), a criminal on the run (Mickey Rourke), and a double-dealing federale (Eva Mendes) are all in on the action, which involves a plot to kill the Mexican president and shift the balance of power in Mexico.
Handling the writing, direction, cinematography, and just about everything else, Rodriguez has crafted a tribute to the spaghetti Western films of Sergio Leone by placing his outlaw hero from DESPERADO and EL MARIACHI in an epic setting populated by numerous characters. Although it can be challenging to keep track of the unfolding subplots, the scenes involving Depp's badly dressed secret agent are the most intriguing and entertaining. Meanwhile Banderas eases back into the lead as the vengeful Mariachi, and Hayek and Blades make the most of their small but significant roles. -- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "...Mr. Rodriguez has a feverish, inventive eye, and an ability to infuse digital video, so often flat and grainy, with uncommon depth and luster..."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...[An] entertainingly quirky film....A swaggering fantasy that pays homage to spaghetti Westerns such as Sergio Leone's THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY..."

-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "...You don't want to miss Depp in this movie -- he knocks it out of the park..."

Johnny Depp is the coolest bad buy ever This movie was pretty cool, but Johnny Depp just stole the whole show with his performance. Everyone talked about his role in "Pirates..." the same year, and as much as I enjoyed that one, I think his work in "Once..." was much better. I can't think of a character that was played as well as the one in this film. He plays a really dirty DEA (I believe)agent that you can't help but like, if not for his sarcasm his sheer determination.
Antonio, Enrique, Eva, and Willam all play their roles to perfection. This film had a great story to it, but I felt it moved a tad too slow. What's up with not much Salma either? Hopefully she had other commitments, b/c they totally blew it with what they did with her character.
Enough complaining...this was one of my favorite films of 2003, and Depp's performance was one of my favorites in history. Submitted by Mike (Grand Forks) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good entertainment If you're looking for a decent action flick with no deeper message 'the good guys usually win' then this is the one for you. Johnny Depp is great "...no, I'll kill the cook, I'm parked out back anyways." Banderos is bulletproof. Hayek is ravishing. And the soundtrack is great. All in all, a light-hearted romp through Hollywood's Mexican quarter. Submitted by abccroft (Penticton, BC, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
The best third El Marachi sequel trilogy movie ever! 2003's Once Upon A Time In Mexico is another excellent Antonio Banderas flick since 1995's Desperado. With only the original main three characters returning in the movie from Desperado. Cheech Marin is back but this time he now plays a criminal hustler outlaw who use to be the mexician bartender owner from the second trilogy Desperado. Now he's telling the same legendary story tale just like Steve Buscemi did in Desperado. On how he too encounter and first met El Marachi to Johnny Depp. Depp a new fresh face plays an american tourist traveller in mexico also portrays a gunshooting criminal bad guy. Which he orders this kind of spanish dinner food he enjoys having. And likes to shoot and kill the cooks while their making to prepare his meal for him in the restaurant's kitchen just for fun only. After that when he's done eating his supper or lunch whatever in this flick. Salma Hayek returns also as the El Marachi's girlfriend. Three scenes in this movie show Banderas who comes back as the well known famous gunslinging guitar playing musician has flashbacks. And he remembers before his girlfriend got murdered and killed. When she was alive they escape out of this hotel room and jump through the hotel buildings window. They decides to leap from there on to a travelling moving bus with the awsome stunts in the movie. Especially the gunshooting special effects explosion formula scene that were in Desperado were really good. There's four new faces in this movie as well William Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, latin singer Enrique Iglesias as El Marachi's sidekick brother and hispanic actor Ruben Blades.
Which he plays a former special forces F.B.I. agent in it. At the end of this movie he finds out that why his girlfriend was murdered? And so it was this mexician army military general who did it for sure and his gang leader soldiers squad team who was with him also. Witnessing the death of his late girlfriend who loved and took care of the El Marachi. The last scene is where the final part where Banderas remembers that his latin lover girlfriend asks El Marachi "What Do You Want Out Of Life". And then El Marachi says to her "Freedom!".

$11.79 Loosely inspired by the time-honored Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. Once Upon A Time In Mexico video
$10.29 Turning up the style and energy levels that he kept under a threshold with 1997's JACKIE BROWN, Tarantino's obvious glee and reverence for the underground kung fu action pictures of the '70s, and Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, makes for a stunning visual spectacle. Employing split screens, slow-motion, an anime sequence, and his trademark ultra-hip musical selections, Tarantino's film dares viewers to be unimpressed.
When her family is slaughtered on her wedding day, a bride swears revenge on her former boss and his assassins. Stars Uma Thurman, directed by Quentin Tarantino. Special features include behind-the-scenes.
After a six-year hiatus, Quentin Tarantino returns to the director's chair with KILL BILL. The movie proves once again that he is a hyperactive visionary and the master of cinematic coolness. Split into two volumes by Miramax in order to ensure that Tarantino's vision would not be compromised (and presumably to sell more tickets), KILL BILL: VOL. 1 tells the first half of the ...
