Standard Screen; Soundtrack English Penelope Cruz and Victoria Abril are arch enemies in the Faustian tale DON'T TEMPT ME. Sent to Earth to determine the fate of boxer Manny (Demian Bichir), Lola (Abril) is an angel from Heaven, and Carmen (Cruz) is a devil pulled out of the vortex of Hell. For Lola, the mission is a chore, a nightmare, and puts her at risk for losing her cushy celestial spot. For Carmen, it is a gift, a vacation, and the one chance she has for redemption. Manny is stuck in the middle of these two manic forces, who must influence his decision to either stick with his competitive boxing career and risk a brain hemorrhage, or quit and save himself. At either end of the spectrum are higher forces. Gael Garcia Bernal plays the slick and slimy Davenport (read: Satan), ruling the chaotic, violent red regions of Hell from which Carmen was sprung. In Heaven, a lovely white oasis of cabaret and leisure time, Fanny Ardant is a graceful Marina D'Angelo who encourages Lola with her singing career. A witty and amusing film in French (Heaven), Spanish (Earth), and English (Hell), with many moments of tongue-in-cheek insight on the battle of good versus evil, director Augustin Diaz Yanes has spun an entertaining yarn with DON'T TEMPT ME. $10.29 This beautifully filmed, expertly acted movie about two 17-year-old, middle-class Mexican boys on summer break is deceivingly complex. The basic plot of the film is that best friends Tenoch (Diego Luna, BEFORE NIGHT FALLS) and Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal, AMORES PERROS), who think of nothing but sex, convince a beautiful 28-year-old woman, Luisa (Maribel Verdu), to go on a road trip with them to a nonexistent beach. They get lost. They flirt and giggle and fawn over Luisa hoping to win her over with their boyish charms. And that's about it. But that simple plotline merely provides structure for the poetry and meaning that is woven into the film with photography and narration. Periodically throughout the film, while the action continues normally, the sound stops. A voice over then gives information--sometimes a brief biography of one of the characters (birth date, name of father and mother, consequences of birth, primary childhood experiences), or a note about what each of the characters is ...

$10.09 After cynical New York advertising copywriter Roger Swanson (Campbell Scott) is dumped by his on-again/off-again girlfriend, Joyce (Isabella Rossellini), who is also his boss, his painful workday is further complicated by the unexpected arrival of his 16 year-old nephew, Nick (Jesse Eisenberg). After asking to spend the night at Roger's, Nick reveals that he has come to ask for help--in hopes of ditching his virginal status, Nick begs Roger for a lesson in the art of seduction. Embittered Roger then takes on the role of a nocturnal drill sergeant in an imaginary war between the sexes, starting Nick's training at an upscale singles bar. There, they meet two beautiful women (Jennifer Beals and Elizabeth Berkeley) who turn out to be less malleable than Roger expects. Before the night is through, Roger and Nick go to some dark places where their preconceptions about women get smashed to pieces.
With ROGER DODGER, first time writer-director Dylan Kidd has created a unique look at male-female relationships, full ...

William H. Macy adds another quirky, offbeat, and original character to his resume in the form of Bernie Lootz, a sad-sack loser who has the worst luck in town. Unfortunately for him, that town happens to be Las Vegas. He gets hired by his old friend Shelly Kaplowitz (the excellent Alec Baldwin, hitting his stride) to work at the Shangri-La Hotel and Casino, where his bad luck rubs off on the gamblers previously doing well at the tables. But Lootz isn't actually getting paid; he owes money to Shelly, so he is merely working off his debt. Things go haywire when he meets Natalie (Maria Bello) and falls instantly in love--threatening to change his luck. Meanwhile, Shelly is trying to keep the old-school feel of the casino, battling Larry Sokolov (Ron Livingston), who wants ...

The entire Latin-American population has been wiped out in one fell swoop, meaning that one third of the citizens have suddenly vanished! With the governor conspicuous by his absence, it's up to the redoubtable Senator ...
