Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." One of Enya's most popular releases, WATERMARK is an enchantingly dreamy album, featuring washes of keyboards and ethereal vocals. On the title track, the gentle piano melody mimics the sound of falling water, and Enya's multi-tracked voice cascades over the music like a calm wind on a rainy night.
The most memorable composition on this 1988 record is the hit "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)." Marked by its keyboard-generated staccato strings and infectious vocal hook, this piece is probably the singer's best-known (and best-loved) song. A heavenly soundscape, SANCTUM SANCTUORUM, Constance Demby's electronic portraits of pious yet romantic devotion, was originally written to accompany the film FACES OF CHRIST. As with Demby's previous works, her strengths here are in blissfully spare arrangements (including bells, harp, male and female Gregorian-style chants) and confident use of silence, pauses, and slow-pacing. These elements, combined with her knack for moving melodies, create a sound that is utterly solemn and yet filled with an indescribable, supernatural joy. Every piece creates a warm, light-filled sanctuary of impenetrable repose that is frequently visited by angelic voices announcing their arrival with hushed incantations or a sweetly sung "Hallelujah."
