The 2003 film SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE stars Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson and chronicles the humorous romantic travails of the past-50 pair (past 60 in the latter's case). Just as the film was praised for its disregard of the youth-culture imperative, so the soundtrack offers a remarkably sophisticated selection of songs. Sporting a mix of jazz vocals, doo-wop, Brazilian, and French music, the disc is unremittingly romantic.
Things kick off with the inimitable trumpet and voice of Louis Armstrong on "La Vie En Rose." Eventually, the listener moves through everything from the Flamingos' moody 1950s classic "I Only Have Eyes For You" to bossa nova queen Astrud Gilberto shifting into samba mode for "So Nice (Summer Samba)," and French crooner Charles Trenet cooing sensually on "Que Reste-T'il De Nos Amour." A second version of "La Vie En Rose" closes out the album, by a vocalist easily as distinctive as Armstrong, if not quite as accomplished--a promising young talent named Jack Nicholson. $23.45 EQ's Electric series was conceived as a counter-weight to their hugely popular Balance series, with the former presumably providing a showcase for new talent. However, so successful did the first in the series prove, that the label has decided to rejig the concept. King Unique is certainly no newcomer to the scene, for five years now the duo have been ripping up the scene with their remixes and own productions. Even so, this is the British pair's official debut mix CD, and in its honor King decide to play havoc with their own reputation for down and dirty house music, going for a more traditional and smoother style instead. An impressive mix of house and techno, there's plenty to wrap your ears around. The bleeps and bloops, washes of atmospheric synth, and funky bassline on "Who's Afraid of Detroit" or the more minimalistic ...

$7.99 The Reviews:"...focus on their synth-pop songs, which have buoyancy befitting a Saturday night...Though, the album’s standout track is the fuming indie-rock number 'Happy Hour Culture' that slams Corporate America for treating workers as disposable commodities...They’ll get the last laugh if the ambitious and gifted Gramsci Melodic continues its climb." Scott Tady, Entertainment Editor Beaver County Times June 12, 2009"Antonio Gramsci was an Italian philosopher and political theorist who was imprisoned by the dictator Benito Mussolini. No word on if he was a dancer, but Gramsci (pronounced grom-she) Melodic certainly knows the way to dance floor. Purveyors of bouncy, energetic synth-pop, the local quintet release its self-titled debut Saturday...The easy comparisons are to bands like New Order and Duran Duran, but the music is more than a homage to '80s bands. There's distinct, millennial edge to Gramsci Melodic's sound that makes it one of the more intriguing bands in the region." Rege Behe, Music Critic Pittsburgh Tribune-Review June 12, 2009"There aren't many bands in Pittsburgh, or beyond, who travel with their own mascot, but Gramsci Melodic has its own take on Steely McBeam in a dancing character with an oversized green head.Gramsci Melodic, which formed in early 2007 with a nod to philosopher Antonio Gramsci (pronounced Grom-she), is a five-piece synth-rock band that draws comparisons to They Might Be Giants, Weezer and Fountains of Wayne. Now, Gramsci ...
