After paying tribute to actresses of the '30s, '40s, and '50s on her debut album, Sirens...Songs of the Silver Screen, Quinn Lemley turns her attention to '50s cocktail lounge culture on her second album, Cocktails with a Twist. The term "lounge music" might have a negative connotation to some, but Lemley steers clear of schlock and shows a genuine fondness for the classic pop and jazz of that era. If Lemley's goal was to transport us back to a time when one sipped dry martinis in a cocktail lounge while Julie London, Frank Sinatra, or Jo Stafford played on the jukebox, the singer does so nicely on her appealing versions of "An Occasional Man," "Besame Mucho," and "Love Me or Leave Me." The CD's more humorous moments come on Afro-Cuban-influenced numbers like "C'est Si Bon" and "Quando Bailar," but on the whole, Cocktails with a Twist isn't as humorous or as theatrical ...

Solo know where they come from; if not for the slightly hip-hoppish feel, "Heaven" could be a mid-'60s Temptations single. This is still new-age soul in the Intro, Shai and, of course, Boyz II Men vein, but compared to those groups Solo's sound is almost nostalgic. In fact, they aren't afraid to cop a lick or two straight from the source--"Xxtra," a slow, serpentine love-groove, begins with a sampled slice straight off the great Dramatics hit, "In The Rain." This 20-track collection, released in 1995, features both new songs by light-pop singer Neil Sedaka, and updated versions of his hits from the 1960s and '70s. Just as he did decades earlier with "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," the Brooklyn-born performer offers a mellow ballad-style version of "Love Will Keep Us Together," replacing the slick '70s-era production with a lush, elegant orchestral arrangement. On the other side of the sonic spectrum is Sedaka's revamp of "Laughter in the Rain," which turns the easy-going number into an upbeat, synth-laden duet with his daughter, Dara. While fans of Sedaka's heyday may be put off by some of the tracks on TUNEWEAVER, the compilation serves as an intriguing bridge from his later career to his early days, making it a notable addition to his catalogue.

After the huge success of the Fugees' THE SCORE, Pras Michel was easily the quietest member of the group; outside of the ubiquitous 1998 hit "Ghetto Supastar" from the movie BULWORTH, followed by a rather rushed debut of the same name, Pras was mostly musically silent.
