There are bands in rock history that came oh-so-close to making it, who just never broke through for one reason or another. Chicago power pop champions Enuff Z'Nuff was one such band, but in their case, you can easily point out their fatal flaw. When they first burst on the scene during the late '80s, the group had little in common musically with the then-thriving glam metal movement, as their prime influences were the Beatles and fellow Chicagoans Cheap Trick. But, as evidenced by their first few videos -- "New Thing" and "Fly High Michelle" -- the quartet made the mistake of getting so dolled up that they made even Pretty Boy Floyd blush. As a result, the band couldn't shake their glam tag when grunge exterminated the genre, and never received the attention they deserved. Which is a shame -- as proven by any of the selections on the career encompassing compilation, Favorites, under the image was quite a fine power pop group. While the band is best-known for the two aforementioned songs (both hits on MTV), Enuff Z'Nuff continued on for years afterwards, with la crème de la crème of their catalog included here -- "Right by Your Side," "Mary Ann Lost Her Baby," "Freak," and a cover of the Cheap Trick obscurity "Everything Works if You Let It." Favorites is an exceptional introduction to one of the more overlooked '80s era rock bands. ~ Greg Prato

Japan exclusive compilation for the long running melodic rock act features 19 tracks spanning the bands career from 1984 to the present. Pony Canyon. 2003.

Kyuss' fourth release is entitled ...And the Circus Leaves Town, and apparently it took whatever it was that made their previous release so compelling with it. The band still opts for a bottom-heavy, filling-rattling assault, but they also try to create songs that aren't really there. By containing their thundering ambitions to more bite-size (five- to six-minute) chunks, this record constantly comes up short. Tracks like "Gloria Lewis" ...

Additional personnel: Danny Jordan (keyboards).
Liner Note Author: Dave Marsh.
While lacking the monumental impact of Kick Out the Jams, the MC5's second album is in many regards their best and most influential, its lean, edgy sound anticipating the emergence of both the punk and power pop movements to follow later in the decade. Bookended by a pair of telling covers -- Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." -- the disc is as much a look back at rock & roll's origins as it is a push forward into the music's future; given the Five's vaunted revolutionary leanings, for instance, it's both surprising and refreshing to discover the record's emotional centerpiece is a doo wop-inspired ballad, "Let Me Try," that's the most lovely and gentle song in their catalog. The recurring theme which drives Back in the USA is adolescence, its reminiscences alternately fond and embittered -- while cuts like "Tonight," "Teenage Lust," "High School," and "Shakin' Street" celebrate youth in all its rebellious glory, others like "The American Ruse" and "The Human Being Lawnmower" condemn a system which eats its young, filling their heads with lies before sending them off to war. Equally gripping is the record's singular sound -- produced by Jon Landau with an almost complete disregard for the bottom end, Back in the USA captures a live-wire intensity 180 degrees removed from the group's live sound yet perfectly suited to the material at hand, resulting ...

Mudvayne LD 50 CD  (2000) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Japan

CD $40.75  5 stars
Japanese edition of the heavy metal act's major label 2000 debut. 19 tracks including, 'Monolith', 'Dig', 'Internal Primates Forever', '-1', 'Death Blooms' & two bonus livetracks, 'Dig' & 'Cradle'. Standard jewelcase. 2001 release. This Japanese version contains two live bonus cuts.
Personnel: Gurrg (vocals, guitar); Kud (vocals); sPaG (drums).
Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace.
Recording information: Warehouse Studio, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Photographer: Dean Karr.
Mudvayne boasts a couple of elements that distinguish it from most contemporary heavy metal outfits. The band adopts bizarre facial makeup that is less suggestive of Kiss than of a bunch of boys who, having failed to plan their Halloween costumes, threw something together by raiding their mother's vanity case. And lead singer Kud (they have funny pseudonyms, too) doesn't always sing in a typical hardcore howl, sometimes descending into a more conventional voice, as if he were auditioning to replace Sebastian Bach in the Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde. Such characteristics suggest that, for Mudvayne, the thrash style is something of a pose, a suspicion enhanced by reference to the CD booklet, which contains an acknowledgments section as lengthy and gushy as what you'd find on a teen pop album. Can these guys giving thanks and love to family and friends be the same ones performing aggressive lockstep metal, spewing obscenities, and singing about suicide? It seems so, but it's hard to take seriously. (The "L.D." in the album's title refers to "lethal dose," and the "50" refers to a level of toxicity at which 50 out of 100 test animals will die.) [A 'clean' version of the album was released in 2001 as well.] ~ William Ruhlmann
L.D. 50 is the scientific measurement used to determine the relative lethal dosage of a toxic substance. Thus, it's an entirely appropriate title for the major-label debut of these decidedly toxic troublemakers.
While these heavy rockers churn out gut-wrenching guitar riffs, pounding drumbeats, and snarling ...
