A con artist must lead a church gospel choir to victory in a national competition before he can collcet inheritance. Stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Beyonce Knowles. DVD special features include extended music numbers and scenes. As a young boy growing up in Montecarlo, Georgia, Darrin sings in the church choir alongside his mother (Faith Evans). He and his mom leave town after the choir discovers that she has been singing rhythm and blues in a local club. Twenty years later, Darrin (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is a broke, junior-level advertising executive in New York City who has just been fired. Summoned back to Montecarlo when his only living relative dies, Darrin discovers that he stands to inherit her estate if he can revive the choir at his old church and win the annual Gospel Explosion. Against the odds, Darrin assembles a first-rate choir of talented quirky characters. He also recruits Lilly (Beyoncé Knowles), a jazz singer and single mother who just may steal his heart and help him find himself. Rich with impressive musical talent culled from the worlds of gospel, hip-hop, and R&B, the choir includes members of The O'Jays, as well as T-Bone, Melba Moore, Angie Stone, the Reverend Shirley Caesar, Zane, and Montell Jordan. Directed by Jonathan Lynn, the film also stars LaTanya Richardson, Steve Harvey, Wendell Pierce, Mike Epps, and Rue McClanahan. Building upon the revolution in Iranian cinema initiated by Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi has created a daring, innovative body of work, concerned with the human experience of social inequality as manifested on the streets of Tehran. THE MIRROR is the second in an interwoven trilogy that also includes THE WHITE BALLOON and THE CIRCLE. All of these films take as their main focus women or girls, caught within an unjust and bureaucratic system, who exhibit unexpected reservoirs of strength which are nonetheless often shown to be insufficient for change. Here it is Mina who takes center stage, a little girl with her arm in a cast whose mother does not come to pick her up from school one day. Undaunted, Mina dives into the chaos of the city to find her own way home, even though she doesn't know her address; a few random characters come to her aid, including a motorbike rider and a kindly bus driver. For the most part, however, people let the unconventional presence of the vulnerable little girl pass without a second thought. Mina observes everything magnanimously, and in the middle of the film she asserts herself in such a surprising fashion that it changes the remainder of the story entirely. Panahi works within a uniquely Iranian form of postmodernism, blending self-reflexivenenss with a marked social consciousness, and a distinctly-felt awareness of the relationship between the filmmaker and performer. The sheer beauty of the film, the engaging charm of the characters, and the bustling vitality of the Tehran streets draw viewers in to what is essentially a compassionate, humane portrait of class and gender inequality in Iran.
