| | Precious Things: The String Quartet Tribute To Tori Amos CD (2001)
Nomeansno/Hanson Brothers - Would We Be...Live? film
$13.29 Includes booklet with photos of the inspired dolls of Pat Kochie.
Tori Amos does not appear on Precious Things; it is a tribute album that presents 13 instrumental versions of her songs performed by a string quartet. Violinists Pam Jacobson and Randy Clews, violist Tom Tally, cellist Steve Velez, and bassist Fred Charlton are joined by Los Angeles DJ Transient; the collection was produced, arranged, and conducted by Jim McMillen. The addition of Transient's synth washes and burbling electronic sound effects is the most unfortunate part of Precious Things -- the rattling of what sounds like a sampler clearing its throat tarnishes the otherwise charming lilt of "Caught a Lite Sneeze." Two versions of "Precious Things appear here. The opening track is rather straightforward, but without Amos' vocals and a piano, the arrangement can't replicate the bruised emotion of the original. A similar take on the song closes the album, but it is muddled with more electronic noodling from Transient. The ...
| | Flaming Lips Fight Test CD (2003) Extended Play; Enhanced CD
Nomeansno/Hanson Brothers - Would We Be...Live? review
$8.49 FIGHT TEST was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
In sating fans waiting for the follow-up to 2002's YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS, The Flaming Lips cobbled together the FIGHT TEST EP. Using the two-part British single for "Fight Test" as a springboard, Wayne Coyne and company included a tasty mix of live covers and remixes to sweeten this package. Having gone on the road with Beck as both an opening and backing band during his tour for SEA CHANGE, the Lips easily deliver a gorgeous, acoustic-soaked reading of his "The Golden Age." A foray into the Radiohead catalog yields an equally effective live cover of "Knives Out" that's juxtaposed by a semi-acoustic take on the Kylie Minogue dance bauble "Can't Get You Out of My Head."
Although the nearly 10-minute Scott Hardkiss Floating in Space Mix of "Do You Realize??" could stand to be shortened a bit, the Lips hit paydirt with a pair of new songs. "The Strange Design of Conscience" is a hypnotically enticing nugget and "Thank You Jack White (For the Fiber-Optic Jesus That You Gave Me)" uses a countrified narrative to tap into the White Stripes zeitgeist.
The title track of this seven track EP is taken from the 2002 album, 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots', & it's backed with seven non-LP tracks, a cover of ...
| | A Perfect Circle Thirteenth Step CD (2003)
Nomeansno/Hanson Brothers - Would We Be...Live? DVD
$11.29 With its sophomore effort, THIRTEENTH STEP, A Perfect Circle permanently sheds any clinging notions of being a Tool side-project. Although Maynard James Keenan's plaintive vocals immediately conjure up thoughts of his other outfit, APC distinguishes itself by furthering the melodic elements present on the group's first outing, MER DE NOMS. "The Package" starts things off slowly, with a foreboding guitar line and minimal drum cadence that gradually build into a full-blown Sabbath-like dirge. Carried along by the fluid bass playing of Jeordie White (formerly known as Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson), "The Noose" gives a tip of the hat to the Cure's gloomiest work, while White and guitarist Billy Howerdel create an entrancingly chiming bass/guitar tapestry on "Blue."
Though many of the album's tracks surge with APC's powerful metal riffs, the folky "A ...
| | NoMeansNo People's Choice CD (2004)
Nomeansno/Hanson Brothers - Would We Be...Live? movie DVD
$10.09 For more than two decades, the post-punk wiseass subgenre Nomeansno helped steer still loses out to the arch sound of its better-looking cousins -- the ones back East -- who wear fashionable leather and prune-swallowing looks on their skinny mugs. The Vancouver veterans admit the supposed frivolity of their lengthy career. "How f*cken [sic] old are Nomeansno?" the bathroom graffiti captured for the cover of The People's Choice reads. "Give it up grand dads." And this from a community happy to welcome Mission of Burma (active years: 1980-1983) back to the fold! The gall. People's Choice combines Nomeansno rarities with highlights spanning most of the band's Alternative Tentacles years, particularly Wrong, Sex Mad, You Kill Me, and Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie. Its most vital work always shared space with well-meaning art rock noise, ...
