Award winning movie about a snobby phonetics professor who agrees to a bet that he can take a flower girl and turn her into a high society women. Rex Harrison, Hyde White Wilfred , Audrey Hepburn, Stanley Holloway star. An insufferably arrogant linguist, Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison), bets a colleague that he can transform a flower-selling Cockney guttersnipe into a regal lady. His quarry, the irrepressible Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), accepts his offer for diction lessons in good faith, hoping to improve her station with a career as a shopgirl. This quintessential musical, scored by Lerner and Loewe, was based on the 1913 play PYGMALION by George Bernard Shaw, and virtually swept the Academy Awards, winning, among others, Best Picture, Director, and Actor (Harrison).
A priceless classic, MY FAIR LADY has become one of the most popular musicals of all time. Based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play PYGMALION, the film swept the Academy Awards. Cecil Beaton's lavish sets and costumes and Lerner and Loewe's winning score became the background for George Cukor's striking mix of styles that ranged from the fantastic to the abstract in his telling of the tale of a waif who's educated into being a lady. Egotistical linguist Professor Henry Higgins (Oscar-winning Rex Harrison) bets his friend, Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White), that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) in time for an important society ball. His gamble could pay off--but the spirited Eliza is more of a handful than the Professor could have predicted. As she slowly becomes more refined, and less reliant upon him, Higgins realizes, to his confusion, that he can't live without her. The film was nominated for 12 Oscars and won eight, including Best Picture and Director.
Theatrical release: October 21, 1964.
Filmed at the Warner Bros. Studios.
One of the most expensive musicals ever, the estimated budget was $17 million.
Jack Warner reportedly paid $5.5 million to the Shaw estate for the rights to the musical; additionally, the owners of the stage property were to receive 47.5% of all proceeds after the first $20 million.
The Broadway musical MY FAIR LADY was staged by Moss Hart, produced by Herman Levin, and starred Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison, and Stanley Holloway.
Warner didn't want to cast Julie Andrews in the film because she wasn't known enough in the U.S. at the time.
Vincente Minelli was the studio's first choice for director.
MY FAIR LADY was named Best Film by the New York Film Critics and one of the 10 Best Films of the Year by the National Board of Review.
Marni Nixon, who dubbed Audrey Hepburn's singing voice, had previously dubbed Natalie Wood's singing voice in WEST SIDE STORY and Deborah Kerr's in THE KING AND I. Many speculated that Hepburn was passed over for an Academy Award nomination because she did not do her own singing.
The voice for Jeremy Brett, who played Freddie Eynsford-Hill, was supplied by Bill Shirley.
Dr. Peter Ladefoged from UCLA served as phonetics advisor.
Actor Wilfrid Hyde-White served as "Ascot" advisor.
Cecil Beaton's screen credit reads Costumes, Scenery, and Production Designer, which in actuality referred to his work for the stage version of MY FAIR LADY. For the film, he was responsible for Costumes, Makeup and Hair.
George Bernard Shaw's straight play PYGMALION was adapted for the screen in 1938, starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller.

Simply stunning Gorgeous to look at, luverly to hear. My only disappointment was Audrey, would have much rather seen Julie Andrews in the role. Thank goodness Marnie Nixon does Audrey's voice. Otherwise a perfect movie. Submitted by Lesley (Sydney Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

One of Hollywood's best Broadway musical films This is one of Hollywood's finest moments when it comes to adapting a Broadway musical for the stage. And what a musical! It has some of the loveliest tunes to have ever graced the stage and a book with real characters and dialogue, courtesy of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Rex Harrison reprises his Broadway role as does Stanley Holloway. Audrey Hepburn is the picture of Eliza Doolittle. The film manages to be quite faithful to the original play-nearly word for word- and retains much of the intimacy of the stage. Submitted by a reviewer (Stroudsburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? $10.25 This characteristically spectacular Ross Hunter musical production, a parody of the films of the 1920s, stars Julie Andrews as the eager young Millie Dillmount. She arrives in New York City in the 1920s intent on a job as a secretary with a rich, handsome, eligible boss. Deciding to adopt the appearance of a flapper, she has her hair bobbed. At a women's hotel run by Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie), who also runs a white slavery ring, she meets the beautiful, naive Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore). Millie does get a job with a handsome boss, Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), but he has eyes only for Miss Dorothy, and Millie is forced to make do with Jimmy Smith (James Fox), a paper-clip salesman. After they've returned to the hotel from attending a party at the Long Island estate of wealthy Muzzy van Hossmere (Carol Channing), Millie finds that Miss Dorothy has disappeared. When she and Jimmy detect the scent of opium in Mrs. Meers's room, they realize she has a sideline. The valiant Jimmy must go in drag to uncover the whereabouts of the white slavers' hideout. The cast and crew perform admirably in this light farce that is almost too sweet for its own good.

My Fair Lady review
$24.39 Considered one of the most popular musicals of all time, WEST SIDE STORY earned director Robert Wise an Oscar for Best Director as well as nine other Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Realistically portrayed characters and their surroundings and expert editing complementing innovative dance sequences mark this highly stylized modern-day Romeo and Juliet tale. The stage is set in New York's Upper West Side in the 1950s, where the area's slums are plagued by racial tensions acted on by two rival gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Caucasian Jets. In the middle of this mess is young, innocent Maria (Natalie Wood), a Puerto Rican seamstress whose brother, Bernardo (George Chakiris), is the leader of the Sharks. Despite the warnings of Anita (Rita Moreno), Bernardo's fiery girlfriend, Maria falls in love with a young, hopeful Polish boy, Tony (Richard Beymer), who used to belong to the Jets, now headed by Riff (Russ Tamblyn). When Tony, on Maria's urging, tries to stop a rumble between the gangs, tragedy ensues, marking their dedicated love affair with violence and desperation. The infectious, lyrical landmark score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim help round out one of the greatest musical experiences ever captured on film.

| | Rebel Music: The Bob Marley Story DVD (2000)
My Fair Lady review
$21.49 Bob Marley has, since his death in 1981, become an icon of unimaginable stature. Ask anyone who comes to mind when they think of reggae and the answer will inevitably be Bob Marley. Go to any college campus and look inside the dorm rooms and there will almost certainly be a Bob Marley poster in at least half the rooms because he has come to symbolize disenchantment with the established social order. However, few who listen to his music realize the depth and range of Bob Marley's political, philosophical, and religious beliefs. This documentary tells Bob Marley's story through his words and music, as well as through interviews with those who knew him best, including his wife, Rita, and fellow reggae pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry.

$10.49 WILD ANGELS: The Hells Angels ride in this cool, downbeat biker film from B-movie godfather Roger Corman. A pre-EASY RIDER Peter Fonda stars as Heavenly Blues, the Angels' black-leather-clad leader. When his friend Loser (Bruce Dern) gets shot by the cops, he and the Angels bust him out of the hospital, but he dies and they end up trashing his funeral in a drunken orgy. Corman turns it all into a sort-of Western, capturing a nicely elegiac tone as he portrays--without judgment--the lifestyle of these modern outlaws. He even predicts the death of countercultural hedonism before many people were even aware it existed. American social leaders were outraged when the film was chosen as the only U.S. entry for the 1966 Venice Film Festival, where it was considered an important cinematic statement. It's certainly more than mere exploitation, and benefits from striking outdoor photography and camerawork. A record-breaking box-office success, THE WILD ANGELS launched a whole genre: the 1960s biker film.
HELL'S BELLES: A stunt-riding rancher wins a new motorcycle in a contest and a crazed biker king steals it. Chain-swing action ensues when the biker king challenges the rancher to a gladiator-style battle on wheels.
