| | Voodoo Child Baby Monkey CD Voodoo Child Discography of CDs
Moby's Voodoo Child project has been the repository for various musical ideas he's taken an interest in, usually on a personal level: house early in his career, ambient techno during the mid-'90s, and for 2004's Baby Monkey, what he terms "straightforward electronic dance music." Prompted by a great night out in Glasgow, along with his subsequent wish to make an enjoyable record that wouldn't be scrutinized by fans and critics (who expect something specific from a Moby record), these 12 tracks hark back to his early-'90s genesis as a producer. They also sound nothing like straightforward electronic dance music as it exists in 2004. For Moby, straightforward means highly melodic, blandly rhythmic, and reproducible mostly on boards he could've owned (and probably did own) a dozen years earlier. After an opener whose blues-vocal sample is probably a sop to his Play/18 audience, he floats a set of tracks that substitute a little old-style Chicago acid and Detroit strings for the rave euphoria of his earliest productions, but often sounds virtually identical to a generic dance record circa 1992. A few tracks rise above, like "Electronics," which possesses a charming vision of chiming techno reminiscent of Orbital's early Kraftwerk fixation. Nearly everything else here, though, is remarkable only for its slavish devotion to early techno, despite the obvious lack of ideas and lack of progression that marked mainstream dance before an avalanche of stylistic influence -- from drum'n'bass to disco, hip-hop to R&B -- overwhelmed the "purists" in the mid-'90s. ~ John Bush

Baby Monkey
$13.29 In terms of sonic fingerprints, 2003's SKULL RING is as close as solo Iggy Pop had come to the classic Stooges sound since the `70s. By this time, Iggy had reunited with the surviving Stooges, who back him on four cuts. Accordingly, those tracks are full of raw, punky ...

| | Chris Stamey Travels In The South CD (2004)
Baby Monkey
$13.75 A founding leader of the influential cult band the dB's, Chris Stamey has spent most of last 15 years producing other people's discs (Alejandro Escovedo, Yo La Tengo, Whiskeytown) rather than creating his own. Not counting a 1995 instrumental album, Travels in the South marks his first record since 1991, when he released both the solo Fireworks and Mavericks, a duet disc with his old dB's partner Peter Holsapple. South, however, shows little sign of rustiness. The album kicks off with the glorious "14 Shades of Green," a chimey gem that takes a nostalgic look at a hometown. This leadoff track also establishes the theme of traveling that runs through the disc. Songs like "Insomnia," "Ride," and the ...

| | Cheap Trick Dream Police CD (1979) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Baby Monkey
$7.59 Although Cheap Trick's fourth studio album, DREAM POLICE, was ready for release at the beginning of 1979, it was delayed for nearly a year due to the surprise success of their hit single "I Want You To Want Me" and album AT BUDOKAN. When it did finally come out in September, it became the band's biggest studio album, peaking at #6 on the charts and going platinum.
There are more than a few Trick classics included on DREAM POLICE. The fiercely rocking title track (one of the band's most renowned compositions), "Way of the World," and two epics--the nearly ten-minute-long "Gonna Raise Hell" and a seven-and-a-half- minute rendition of "Need Your Love" (originally released as a live version on AT BUDOKAN) ...

Baby Monkey
$15.39 CONJURE ONE [Limited] is a specially packaged limited edition which contains a remix bonus CD "Tears From The Moon", "Redemption", and "Sleep". Includes two mixes of "Tears From The Moon".
Rhys Fulber had already proven his skills in ambient dance with Delerium. On Conjure One, he develops his own ideas further, applying a wonderful grasp of sounds from the Mediterranean and Middle East. Fulber traveled the world to put together this breathtaking work, which was recorded in Amsterdam, Vancouver, London, and Los Angeles. Given his busy production schedule, it's no surprise that this took three years to finish. The result is satisfying to say the least, as Conjure One is nothing short of sweeping ambient dance-pop. Like Sarah McLachlan's contribution to Delerium's "Silence," the guest vocalists here enhance Fulber's already powerful songwriting. Most magnificent are Sinéad O'Connor ("Tears From the Moon"), Poe ("Center of the Sun"), and Marie Claire D'Ubaldo ("Manic Star"). With other collaborations from Billy Steinberg and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, this ethereal solo debut (if you can call it a solo effort) is another big step forward for Fulber, as well as culturally diverse pop. A limited-edition version comes with a second disc of remixes. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
