Larry Carlton may not have been issuing records in the United States with any regularity, but Sapphire Blue proves he hasn't been sitting on his hands, either. It's Carlton's first blues-oriented album in many years. Featuring a large band with a complete horn section, Reese Wynans on B-3, Matt Rollings on Rhodes piano, Terry McMillan on piano, and others, Carlton is in fine, even understated form here. This group plays like a band with a soloist at its center, not like a bunch of paid hacks backing up a guitar whiz. Witness the gorgeous horn charts by Jim Horn on "Friday Night Shuffle," and the triple melody line in "A Pair of Kings." The laid-back, jazzy blues feel of "Night Sweats," with a memorable groove and minimal horn punctuations, leaves Carlton's guitar room to jam inside a warm space. The title track is a B.B. King-style groover -- à la 1970 -- with a stinging, slightly distorted guitar sound from Carlton. This isn't the blues, it is blues, played soulfully and with considerable musicianship that forgoes flash for feeling, albeit muted by pristine production. Carlton's fans may puzzle over this one a bit because of its concentration on aesthetic beauty and relative purity, but those who weren't paying attention should sit up and take notice. Blues/Instrumental A blues album that is too laid back and the standard of guitar playing should be of a higher level considering Larry's amazing ability this album lacks a good vocalist that would have given the songs a lift listen to "Larry Carlton" and "Strikes Twice" C.D's and you'll know what I mean. Blues Instrumental / Guitar A good album for most good players but Larry Carlton is a prodigious talent and this effort is way below par there are some solo highlights but most of the songs are a little dreary and lack the credibility vocals would have added a poor recording from an musician who has produced excellence in the past. Brilliant and refined. Great music. This is blues, but not that "Chicago style" or "Black" blues or something. For me it is a great pleasure to listen to this album over and over. The guitar is very jentle and "clever", I didnt hear mr. Carlton's other works before but I guess he is very fine jazz misician. And there are 2 tracks featuring very cool harmonica, too. I didn't know that Larry Carlton's got soul. Oh, Larry Carlton should have recorded more blues like this instead of all those new age elevator music with Four Play. The band's is tight, and Carlton is really into it. I almost wanted to give this less than 5 stars because some of the intros remind me of Four Play, but once you get pass that, there is real meat in the music. Buy it!
