This all-sacred album was completely written by the brothers themselves, with one exception ("Swing Low Sweet Chariot"). Recording information: 08/08/1958-08/10/1958. Arrangers: Ira Louvin; Charlie Louvin. Satan Is Real is the Louvin Brothers' best known album, largely because of its bold title and its eccentric cover artwork, in which Charlie and Ira Louvin, surrounded by flames symbolizing Hades, pose in front of a huge, cross-eyed model of the Devil. While more than a few hipsters have found an ironic laugh in the album's over-the-top imagery, one listen to the music confirms that the Louvin Brothers weren't joking in any way, shape or form. Satan Is Real is an album of fierce, plain spoken sincerity in which the Louvins, who started their career singing gospel material, perform songs that deal with the high stakes of sin and redemption, in which Satan truly does have power to rival the Lord. The opening title track sets the tone for the set, in which a man at a church service tells the congregation how ...

Family Who Prays

Liner Note Author: Chuck Young. This collection is an accompanying volume to TeeVee's Louvin Brothers' 20 All-Time Greatest Hits. It fares far better as a representative sample of the Louvin Brothers' gospel music than the other did as a best-of. Here are 20 tracks, with all the Louvins' sacred classics like "The Family That Prays Together," "The Kneeling Drunkard's Plea," "Wreck on the Highway," "Oh Why Not Tonight," "Praying," and many more. But even here, the greatest Louvin church tune is missing: "Satan Is Real" is, inexplicably, not included here. Nonetheless, for the money, this is a fine sampling. ~ Thom Jurek Gospel and Christian-themed music was always integral to the Louvin Brothers repertoire; any given album or collection is likely to include one or two tunes infused with the power of the Holy Spirit. At its title indicates, ...
| | Louvin Brothers Weapon Of Prayer CD (1962)
Family Who Prays
$10.69 The Louvin Brothers recorded this collection of patriotic, often military-themed songs in 1962, a few years before the Vietnam War would politicize and polarize pop music in a manner unimaginable at the time, and for better or worse this set has dated in a way that most of the Louvins' material has not. While Charlie and Ira Louvin are in superb voice as usual, and the production is clean and unobtrusive, capturing the harmonies and ace instrumentalists with appropriate clarity, the songs often sound overly sentimental or jingoistic, and even the often tragic lyrical turns that are the hallmark of the Louvin Brothers' work sound a bit obvious in this context. Much as this album's "The Great Atomic Power" has come to be viewed ironically with time rather than taken at face value, most of these songs (which frankly are not as good as the Louvins' ...

| | Duke Ellington Presents... CD (1956) Remastered
Family Who Prays
$7.79 Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Ray Nance (vocals, trumpet, violin); Jimmy Grissom (vocals); Russel Procope (alto saxophone, clarinet); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet); "Cat" Anderson, Clark Terry, Willie Cook (trumpet); Britt Woodman, John Sanders, Quentin Jackson (trombone); Jimmy Woode (bass); Sam Woodyard (drums). Includes liner notes by Joseph P. Muranyi and Joseph F. Laredo. Digitally remastered by Tom Moulton (Frankford Wayne Mastering Labs, New York, New York). Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Ray Nance (vocals, violin); Jimmy Grissom (vocals); Russell Procope (clarinet, alto saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Harry Carney (bass clarinet, baritone saxophone); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Clark Terry, Willie Cook, Cat Anderson (trumpet); Quentin Jackson, John Sanders, Britt Woodman (trombone); Jimmy Woode (double bass); Sam Woodyard (drums). This unusual set only has four Duke Ellington compositions among the 11 songs. He features a different soloist on most of the songs (which include seven standards not associated with Ellington's music). There are showcases for trumpeter Cat Anderson, Ray Nance (who sings and plays violin on "I Can't Get Started"), singer Jimmy Grissom, baritonist Harry Carney, and the altos of Johnny Hodges and Russell Procope, as well as two apiece for clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton and tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves. The closing "Blues" gives many of the players an additional opportunity to be heard. Although this set is not essential, the music is quite enjoyable and it is interesting to hear Duke Ellington playing such tunes as "Laura," "My Funny Valentine," and "Indian Summer." ~ Scott Yanow In the early '50s, one of the great American composers (also performer ...

| | Pernikoff Brothers Go On CD (2009)
Family Who Prays
$8.35 Go On, the Pernikoff Brothers' first EP, is a "soulfully intimate debut built on timeless brotherly harmonies and raw acoustic strength."Go On was recorded at an unlikely time and place. Tom and Rick are Silicon Valley startup kids. They sit in board rooms with high powered Venture Capitalists, have lunch outside of the Facebook Headquarters, and once shared an office with the YouTube founders. At night, the computers are shut down and the Pernikoff Bros. are just songwriters. From St. Louis, to Boston, to San Francisco, Tom and Rick tell a story about sacrifice and hope. Go On is not only about lost love but also a true testament to the notion that you can do and be anything you want.Tom and Rick Pernikoff began composing and playing music together in St. Louis. They spent years honing their skills as instrumentalists on guitar and bass respectively, while immersed in the classic sounds of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and everything Motown. In Boston, the brothers grew fascinated with improvisational music. They studied composition and technique with world class musicians and educators, Jon Damian and Bob Nieske. The Brothers left Boston ...
