After releasing a demo tape and after the great exposure of the track "Ja y Ti" on the Polish charts, Collage recorded their first work. Surprising everybody, the band was well received in Europe and afterwards an Italian release was also printed, reinforcing the band's reputation even more. Mainly featuring small and powerful tracks, whose main characteristic is the constant duel of electric guitar and keyboards, this CD is a good start for a new listener of the band. The Polish lyrics are not a hindrance for non-Polish audiences, as the music always flows melodically and the titles, written in English, give an idea of what the lyrics are saying. The title track is reminiscent of early Marillion work, with a neo-progressive drum attack mixed with well-chosen digital keyboard timbres and melodic guitar lines. After Moonshine, it was certain that the pressure for another, similar work would be very big. Maybe this feeling frightened the band and, unfortunately, the arrangements were settled in a pop direction. Probably the band wanted to reach more of an audience beyond the progressive scene, but the final result was unsatisfactory. The men of Pink Floyd have always taken their time, turning out stately epics at a less than hectic clip. Accordingly, 22 years separate ON AN ISLAND from ABOUT FACE, the previous solo album by Floyd axeman/singer David Gilmour. On the latter, Gilmour was still trying to distance his own sound from Floyd's, but with that band mostly a memory in 2006, he was free to honor its legacy, much as Paul McCartney's later albums acknowledged the Beatles' work.
The template for ON AN ISLAND seems to be tracks like "Breathe" from DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. Although it is by no means a definitive collection, GRP's Priceless Jazz is a nice sampler of Louis Armstrong's Decca work, highlighted by "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Struttin' with Some Barbecue," "Gone Fishin'," "What a Wonderful World" and an alternate take of "Solitude."
