The lovely Ms. Misdemeanor first gained notoriety as a producer (remember Timbaland?), but she's now considered one of the world's premiere hip-hop mavens. This Japanese edition of her 2003 smash features the bonus track "Pass The Duchie."
With THIS IS NOT A TEST!, Missy Elliott, Virginia's reigning queen of hip-hop, raises the bar once again. Working with producer and partner-in-crime Timbaland, Elliott continues to develop her signature style, which pays tribute to the hip-hop pioneers of yesteryear, while flying forward into a sonic solar system of her very own. The album's tracks--and skits--effortlessly bounce between genres, styles, and tempos, ranging from dancehall ("Keep It Movin" with Elephant Man) to R&B ("I'm Not Perfect" with the Clark Sisters) to straight-up rap ("Wake Up" with Jay-Z).
However, it is on the up-tempo tracks where Elliott truly shines. On the record's first single, "Pass That Dutch," the freewheeling MC sprays lyrics like a scatterbrained genius. "Pump It Up," featuring Nelly, is a hilarious ode to oversized Southern women. And "Let Me Fix My Weave" is the Elliott/Timbaland super-tandem at its most exhilarating. THIS IS NOT A TEST! is even more proof that Missy Elliott is a pop music marvel.
Japanese edition of 2003 album includes one bonus track 'Pass That Dutch' (Kao Pass Brothers Remix). Warner.

Rolling Stone (12/25/03-1/8/04, p.121) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...She still sounds as hungry and driven as ever, refusing to repeat past successes, pushing on to newer and weirder realms...Why anybody would choose to spend their life without a copy of THIS IS NOT A TEST! is a mystery..." Spin (01/04, p.95) - "...Ridiculously, abstrusely , hyper-generously funky....It's both consistently catchy and consistently weird in all the right ways..." - Grade: A- Entertainment Weekly (11/28/03, p.124) - "...Elliott [is] full of vim and vinegar, especially when she's rapping or singing about sex....[On a couple of tracks] Elliott sets out to compete with the champagne-and-silk-underwear crowd of foxy, urban chanteuses..." - Rating: B Q (2/04, p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The sexiest, most ear-popping, jaw-dropping fusion of old-school rap tribute, sparse R&B, mutant bhangra, and beat innovation..." Mojo (Publisher) (1/04, pp.96-7) - 3 stars out of 5 - "'Wake Up' is mesmerising....'Push It' and live hip hop deconstruction 'I'm Really Hot', both inject the set's ruthless minimalism with some fresh sonic ingredients." This Is Not A Test! album
$8.49 In addition to energized versions of such treasured Christmas songs as "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Silent Night," Franklin & the Family contribute several non-traditional songs that explore the depth of God's love and the Christian basis for the holiday. "Now Behold the Lamb," for example, is a ballad that testifies to the truth of salvation, and features stirring ensemble singing, strong solo vocalists, and plenty of enthusiastic exclamations. The deeply funky "Jesus Is the Reason for the Season" kicks things up a notch with its bumping rhythm and infectious chorus. With its mix of old and new musical styles and its impassioned performances, CHRISTMAS is sure to please those looking for a meaningful and musically fresh holiday album.
Contemporary gospel star Kirk Franklin made one of his most accessible and commercially successful records with CHRISTMAS. From Franklin's heartfelt spoken-word intro to the breezy, smoothed-out version of "O Come All Ye Faithful," CHRISTMAS blends devout Christian messages and the power ...

This Is Not A Test! CD music
$18.94 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this jumbled, almost haphazard sequencing is a little disconcerting ...

This Is Not A Test! album
$9.49 A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge commercial smash, and the first real international introduction for many people ...

For Frankie J's 2005 album, THE ONE, the Mexican-born crooner offers up an impressive collection of songs helmed by a noteworthy array of producers, including Mario Winans and Irv Gotti. And while these established music-makers could have turned out an Usher clone, the man born Francisco Javier Bautista maintained enough creative control to craft more of a sensitive, balladeer persona for himself. The singer's style is exemplified ...
