This fine1969 offering from tenor and soprano saxophonist Archie Shepp finds the artist deep within the progressive, politically charged aesthetics and fiery playing that characterized his best avant-garde work.

YASMINA marks Shepp's first meeting with members of the Chicago avant jazz scene, namely Lester Bowie and Roscoe Mitchell from the Art Ensemble of Chicago. There are several other guests here, including Philly Joe Jones and Hank Mobley, that make this exploratory set not only an excellent example of heavy late-'60s out jazz, but an unexpectedly swingin' one at that.

This fine twofer brings together a pair of albums by tenor and soprano saxophonist Archie Shepp--YASMINA, A BLACK WOMAN and POEM FOR MALCOLM, both from 1969. The dates find Shepp with plenty of the progressive conception and fiery playing that characterize his best avant-garde work. More notably, YASMINA marks Shepp's first meeting with members of the Chicago avant jazz scene, namely Lester Bowie and Roscoe Mitchell from the Art Ensemble of Chicago. There are several other guests here, including Philly Joe Jones and Hank Mobley, that make this exploratory set interesting. Jo Jones and Mobley appear on POEM as well, which offers up more of the leader's fierce, hectic out jazz.

Remastered editions of 2 classic jazz albums recorded for the Paris based BYG label in 1969.

Elvin Jones And Then Again/Midnight Walk CD  (2000)

Yasmina, A Black Woman/Poem For Malcolm album
CD $10.69  Audio Samples
This repackage of two of Elvin Jones' Atlantic titles from 1965 and 1967, respectively, reveals something truly unnerving about the drummer before and after his boss, John Coltrane, passed away: that Jones never stopped being a hard bop drummer. On the first date, And Then Again, Jones employs his brothers, Thad and Hank, Charles Davis, Paul Chambers, Hunt Peters, and Art Davis in a program that could have come from the early to mid '60s Blue Note catalog. Horace Silver's funkiness is wedded to knotty, swinging hard bop figures adorned in rhythm by Jones, especially on Davis's "Azan" and Melba Liston's "Len Sirrah." On the latter disc Midnight Walk, Jones hires Thad again, but also employs Dollar Brand, Hank Mobley, Don Moore, and Steve Jams on electric piano. The title track is a shifty little funk number by Arif Mardin with a punchy front line for both trumpet and tenor, accented by the bass with single note runs in the turnarounds. But the high point on the album is Dollar Brand's "Tintiyana," a drawn out modal piece with an ostinato piano section that is heavy on left hand acrobatics before moving the theme and variation into the middle register where it becomes possible for the band to enter into the tune -- almost two minutes in out of six. Once they do, the staccato South ...

All songs written by Charlie Parker except "Raoul" (Maxwell Lemuel "Max" Roach), "This Time The Dream's On Me" (Harold Arlen/John Herndon "Johnny" Mercer), "Tune-Up" (Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson) and "Anthropology" (John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie/Charlie Parker). THE MAX ROACH 4 PLAYS CHARLIE PARKER includes four tracks from MAX ROACH + 4 & MORE. The music on this CD finds drummer Max Roach for the first time dropping the piano out of his quintet and performing with a pianoless quartet. With the departure of Sonny Rollins (who is replaced on three songs apiece by either Hank Mobley or George Coleman), Roach's group (which also featured trumpeter Kenny Dorham and either George Morrow or Nelson Boyd on ...

Dave Burrell Echo CD  (1969) France; Special Edition

Yasmina, A Black Woman/Poem For Malcolm music CDs
CD $18.79
Bandleader Gil Evans once said of Cecil Taylor, "when I hear him I burst out laughing in pleasure because his work is so full of things...There's so much going on." That having been said, Evans would likely be doubled over on the floor, provided he were listening to this spirited Dave Burrell LP. "Echo," the album's opener, begins with a low-end piano crash and, from there, all hell breaks loose. From the opening seconds, every member of this all-star ensemble -- save for Grachan Moncur III, maybe -- is simply blowing or pounding his respective brains out. Interestingly, the sheer incessancy of the group's collective attack, as brutal as it first appears, becomes pleasantly numbing after a while. Make no mistake, though, if "Echo" isn't the noisiest jazz song in the world, it's damned close. This is some seriously free improvisation that may prove too much for the casual avant-garde listener. Thankfully, the session's other tune, "Peace," provides a ...
