| | Grand Funk Railroad Phoenix CD (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Heat In The Street CD music
$8.09 Having scored four consecutive Top Ten albums in the previous two years, Grand Funk Railroad may not have seemed to casual observers like a band who needed to rise phoenix-like from the ashes, but the title of the band's seventh album referred to its re-emergence after a litigious split from manager/producer Terry Knight. Now, they were producing themselves, and they added organist Craig Frost, credited here as a sideman, though he went on to join the band formally. The biggest change, however, was a musical maturity. After releasing five studio albums in a little over two years, Grand Funk waited more than a year before releasing Phoenix, and in that time they managed to come up with more variety than they had displayed before. "Someone," for example, was a surprisingly gentle ballad, and "Rain Keeps Fallin'" was stronger melodically than most of songwriter Mark Farner's previous efforts. Unlike earlier albums, Phoenix didn't seem like one rudimentary rocker after another, which made it Grand Funk's most listenable album so far. And that's not to say it didn't rock, as the leadoff instrumental, "Flight of the Phoenix," and the Top 40 hit that closed the set, "Rock 'n Roll Soul," demonstrated. Unfortunately, Farner's lyrical abilities had not increased, while his self-importance had. ...

| | Como Olvidar... Lo Mejor De Olga Tanon CD (2005) (Import) Canada
Heat In The Street songs
$10.69 A month before Warner Music Latina would unleash Olga Tañón's comeback album, Una Nueva Mujer (2005), the label released another compilation of her hits, Como Olvidar: Lo Mejor de Olga Tañón. This was the third Tañón compilation to date, and a very different one from its predecessors: Exitos y Mas (1995) and A Puro Fuego (2003). Unlike those two, Como Olvidar: Lo Mejor de Olga Tañón focuses on Tañón's Latin pop hits, eschewing her merengue era altogether. That may seem unfortunate, since Tañón's merengues are her claim to fame. However, A Puro Fuego had been an absolutely perfect compilation of that key aspect of her career, so to revisit that music would be redundant. Given this logic, Lo Mejor serves a worthy purpose: it compiles the highlights of her scattershot pop-crossover albums -- that is, Te Acordarás de Mí (1998), Yo por Ti (2001), and Sobrevivir (2002), all of which can be forgone safely by everyone except the most devoted Tañón aficionados, as the highlights of those albums are ...

| | Pat Todd & The Rankoutsiders Outskirts Of Your Heart CDs (2007)
Heat In The Street CD music
$12.85 In 2004, the Lazy Cowgirls, long one of the best-kept secrets in American rock & roll, finally called it quits after nearly 25 years of inspiring music, but lead singer and principal songwriter Pat Todd clearly isn't ready to throw in the towel just yet. Todd has formed a new band, the Rankoutsiders, who follow a similar path to the latter-era Cowgirls -- fast and loud old-school punk on one hand, and hard but heartfelt honky tonk on the other. However, unlike the Lazy Cowgirls, the Rankoutsiders can handle the quieter country material with the same sure hand as the louder, frantic rock stuff, and Todd's first album with the band, The Outskirts of Your Heart, is his most impressive melding to date of his two great (musical) loves. The Outskirts of Your Heart is an ambitious two-disc set, with the first CD primarily devoted to raw, four-on-the-floor rock and the second featuring Todd's acoustic-oriented music, but there's plenty of crosstalk between the two -- "I Wonder Why" has enough swagger to fuel a major city even without drums, and "November 11th" generates a high, lonesome mood despite the Marshall amps. This album features Todd's strongest lineup of musicians since the Ragged Soul-era Cowgirls -- guitarists Nick Alexander and Tony Hannaford, bassist Rick Johnson, and drummer Bob Deagle are tight, grooving, and emphatic regardless of volume -- but the star of this show is Pat Todd, and he's in stellar form here. Lots of rockers talk about passion and commitment, but for Todd those aren't words, they're as necessary to life as water and oxygen, and he has no fear in letting the deepest and most painful secrets of love, life, and survival take the center stage in his songs. Todd can sing with roughhouse fury or smoky sweetness depending on the song, but there isn't a moment on any of these 28 songs where he puts less than a hundred percent of his soul on plastic, and he's rarely had as powerful and diverse a vehicle for his music as he's given himself on The Outskirts of Your Heart. This is a superior work from an estimable and underappreciated talent, and if you love rock & roll that comes from the heart, the soul, and the gut, you owe it to yourself to hear this album. ~ Mark Deming
