In a class of it's own
I must start out by saying if you demand pristine, digital sound, than avoid this recording. Since it's live and in mono, you wont be pleased. Now, if you are interested in this opera at all, and especially if you love it, you MUST HAVE this recording. The performance is completely astonishing; beautifully sung and played, of course, but also with absolutely gripping drama and intensity. One of the keys is John Vickers in the role of Florestan, his aria is one of the greatest vocal performances I have ever heard; musical and so raw with emotion that one almost winces at his pain and ardor. The audience was so overcome by this entire performance that they burst into raucous applause even before Klemperer begins the Leonore #3, to take the opera to the coda. A tremendous recorded monument.
