Formed in Australia circa 1980, the Church refines its graceful, moody, melodic pop-rock on FORGET YOURSELF, with those close, oddly comforting harmonies and glistening guitars sounding as supple and distinctive as ever in 2004. Three-fourths of the original band remains--bassist Steve Kilbey's pointed, slightly raspy vocals and the sleek, moody guitars of Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes are joined by new drummer/producer Tim Powles. FORGET YOURSELF is a bit darker and more brooding than the Church's emblematic '80s sound, with previous overtones of '60s folk and rock complemented by some progressive/art-rock influences. The hazy "June" recalls both the Syd Barrett daze and the languorous WISH YOU WERE HERE era of Pink Floyd. "Nothing Seeker," with its compelling, mounting tension, and the dreamy, feedback-accented closer "Summer" prove beyond any doubt the Church retains its knack for introspective yet pulsating gloom-pop.

Recorded at Spacejunk Studios, Sydney, Australia.

Producers: The Church, Nic Hard, Tim Powles.

The Church: Marty Willson-Piper, Peter Koppes, Steve Kilbey, Tim Powles.

The Church: Steven Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles, Marty Willson-Piper.

Rolling Stone (2/19/04, p.71) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The vocals coo, the guitars are fuzzy, and the songs are sleekly tuneful..."
Q (2/04, p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Their best album in years, showing there's magic in guitars and tunes yet."
Uncut (3/04, p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The Church are, against the odds, still a dreamily appealing proposition."
Magnet (2/04, pp.92-5) - "FORGET YOURSELF is an upper-register Church album with an understated density."

5 stars The Church/Conquer America
This band has been around longer than most dirt and some rocks but you'll never hear them on a classic rock station or anything even closely resembling that. This band has too much to say and too many ways to say it to ever commit that fatal error of hitting the mainstream. They hail from Australia and have made some inroads here in the US with their last couple of release but this is the disc that has the potential of waking the uninterested in the states. From the opening sonics of "Sealine" it's obvious that "The Church" is back in session and everyone is invited inside. This is a deep mix with many periphereal sounds. You'll continue to pick up abstract melodies and soundscapes long after you think you've heard it all. The point is that this is one of those discs that you'll listen to over and over again because there isn't a weak track on it. As far as I know the North American release of "Forget Yourself" is the only one with a 30 minute bonus disc and it's all pure Church, (remember the 2nd disc from "Paralell Universe?")! If this is your first trip with "The Church," all I'll say is start saving your cash 'cause your going to want to pick up all their back catalog.

5 stars Forget Everything
The Church have been a favourite of mine since they reunited for the Hologram of Baal. After Everything was fantastic in an ethereal and melodramatic way and Forget Yourself is just as stunning but has more of an edge and is more raw. Still Koppes and Willson-Pyper's guitars shine through and electrify and SK's vocals melt like sugar. The Church are fantastic and it bewilders me how they are not more widley accepted particulary in North America. I only wish they would have included Canada on the latest tour. All reports say they are mind blowing live as well. Another A+.

4 stars Atmospheric!
This time around, The Church step-up the sonic treatments and produce a swirling, atmospheric work, which will take most listeners several plays to really appreciate. Layers of guitars from Koppes and Willson-Piper dominate this release which is less accessable than previous albums from The Church, but reaches out to new dimensions.

Church After Everything Now This CD  (2002)

Forget Yourself album
CD $14.49  5 stars Audio Samples
Over 2 years in the making and recorded on 3 continents. Thirsty Ear Records. More than two decades and 14 albums down the line, Australia's most persistent dream pop band releases another in a series of Church discs that at this stage are almost interchangeable. Steve Kilbey's voice floats on pillows of cloudy chords provided by the shimmering guitars of Marty Wilson-Piper and Peter Koppes. Guests provide keyboards, violin, and viola accompaniment, but they slide into the haze of the ballads and don't appreciably add to a band whose sound is so well established it seems they're afraid, or at least unwilling, to tinker with the formula. Like the gray pictures of a tranquil ocean on the album's artwork, this music gradually shifts like the tides, taking ...

The Church runneth over at the start of the new millennium, as Steve Kilbey and the rest of the tenured band released Parallel Universe, not just one but two discs, all of music that has been released before. And then again, it's also all new. The first disc, subtitled "Remixture," contains songs that were worked on during the sessions of the band's preceding After Everything Now This, or as the liner notes claim, "alternate outcomes" of those songs. Not remixes in the strict sense, but that doesn't stop the record from feeling like a remix album; whether that's a Pavlovian reaction or due to the fact that the record isn't a coherent, cohesive unit, an unfortunate reality for most remix discs, is up to the listener to decide. The second disc, entitled "Mixture," is made up of six tracks that were unreleased before this set came out, but culled from the same time frame as the other recordings. This is also quite evident from the familiar feel to the proceedings. ...

Recorded between 1978 & 2001. Includes liner notes by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and Johnny Black. A remarkable four-disc set of B-sides and rarities, JOIN THE DOTS serves as a sort of alternate history for the Cure, one of the world's most beloved post-punk/alt-rock bands. Painstakingly compiled by Cure frontman (and the group's only constant member) Robert Smith, DOTS provides dozens of glimpses into the literal flip-side of their singles by collecting many long-lost tracks, including the classic songs previously featured only on the cassette version of STARING AT THE SEA: THE SINGLES. Disc one begins in the late 1970s and consists of early tracks that show the Cure in a wildly adventurous mode--tearing into the punky "Pillbox Tales," drifting through the gloomy "Descent," and bouncing along to the oddly danceable "Throw Your Foot." By disc two, Smith and the lads have become college-rock heroes, and despite their ...

This remastered edition features a 14-track bonus disc of rarities that includes numerous demos, studio outtakes, and live performances. For a band that's known worldwide as the premier purveyors of goth-rock gloom and doom (though hardly incapable of sparkling pop gems), it's no small thing to identify a particular album as their darkest, most disturbing sonic statement. Nevertheless, PORNOGRAPHY surely fills the bill. Reportedly created during ...

This remastered edition features a 15-track bonus disc of rarities that includes numerous demos, studio outtakes, and live performances. If you ever observed (or were) a pale depressed-looking teenager dressed entirely in black, sitting in the corner scribbling frantically into a marble bound notebook, then you already understand the Cure. In the 1980s, the Cure provided the soundtrack for an entire generation of misfit toys, and if SEVENTEEN SECONDS was a wake-up call for the dispossessed, FAITH is the daily affirmation. Scaled back down to a three-piece with the loss of keyboardist Hartley, the Cure is a lean, mean fighting machine, ready to rumble. "Rumble" is the best way to describe the propulsive bass playing of Simon Gallup, whose rolling bass anchors both mid-tempo numbers like "The Drowning Man" and faster fare such as "Primary." While no new ground is broken ("Doubt" is basically a rewrite of "Play for ...
