Richard III review Product Description
In the majestic and sweeping 1955 version of Richard III, Laurence Olivier transfigures Shakespeare's great historical drama into a mesmerizing vision of Machiavellian villainy. Olivier's performance, considered by many the greatest of his career, charges Richard with magnetic malevolence as he steals his brother Edward's crown through a murderous set of machinations. His inspired direction brings to the screen superlative performances by actors Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud, and the young Claire Bloom. ...See Full Description

| Olivier Triumphant ! Many consider Olivier's Richard III to be his masterpiece. Sir John Gielgud was one of them. Even though the academy awards did not embrace this film unlike Oliviers's Hamlet( which received best picture and actor ) it still contains what is said to be his best cinematic performance. His Richard is sly, witty, deceitful, cunning, evil, and charming. He understands the hypocrisy and treachery of the world he lives in and thrives on it. Sometimes he even astounds himself as when he is able to seduce the Lady Anne, a woman who hates him for killing her husband and her father. Olivier's Richard is a full bodied creation. We the audience are captivated by his machinations and want to see how he will succeed in achieving his goals. The cast is uniformly excellent. Sir Ralph Richardson, Claire Bloom, Sir John Gielgud, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke all have shining moments, and look for Hammer Studios actors Michael Gough, Michael Ripper, Patrick Troughton, and George Woodbrige in supporting roles. The Technicolor print for the most part is excellent, but the newly discovered deleted footage is a little murkier than the rest of the film. It distracts for but a few seconds, and does not hinder the enjoyment of the movie. The commentary is educational and intriguing, and the trailers are entertaining. It is especially fun to see Olivier drive to the studio and screen the dailies with his producers. Criterion has done their usual superb job in putting out this dvd. It is definitely worth the price. All hail King Richard III because this masterpiece will live forever. By cg gilman (deerfield beach, fl. usa) |
