Like few groups before them, 40 Below Summer injects pop and metal riffs into their dance froth. Led off by the huge single "Self Medicate," this acclaimed 2003 set includes the tunes "Taxi Cab Confession," "Rain," "Breathless," "Better Life," and five more.
New Jersey nu-metal quintet 40 Below Summer yields solid results by fusing aggression and allure on The Mourning After, its second long-player. The band had worked with veteran hard rock producer GGGarth Richardson for its 2001 debut, Invitation to the Dance, but -- in a curious move -- opted to align with Vertical Horizon overseer David Bendeth here. And while the band's forceful attack still won't land it in the pop survey, Bendeth's input does manage to give the band a foot up on other alternative metal acts in the run for airplay in the "active rock" format. "Self Medicate," the band's breakout hit, careens from brutality to affability, due largely in part to the amazing vocal range of Max Illidge, who turns from Drano-gargle utterances to soaring melodies on a dime. "Taxi Cab Confession" works this same dichotomy, also with likable consequences. Far more puzzling is "Breathless," which finds the outfit capably shifting into pop ballad mode à la Creed. That momentary lapse in direction is soon corrected, however, and as The Mourning After unfolds, tracks like the cathartic "F.E." and the spooky "A Season in Hell" right the wrongs for 40 Below Summer's ballooning headbanger clientele. ~ John D. $14.19 Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair ...

Mourning After songs
$15.65 Recorded in England in the 1960's. Includes liner notes by Jon Mills.
Both sides of all four of the singles the Untamed recorded for producer Shel Talmy, as well as no less than a dozen unreleased singles and some 1966 jingles they did for Radio London, comprise this exemplary overview of this minor but talented mod band's work. Indeed, the only flaw is the absence of their 1964 Decca debut single, "So Long"/"Just Wait" (available on the obscure various-artists anthology Untamed and Innocent). The Untamed occupied an unusual niche in the mid-'60s British mod rock scene: jazzy, but not quite as jazzy as Georgie Fame, but certainly not as much straight-ahead rock as the Who or the Small Faces. They executed this unusual balancing act well on most of their singles, and the unreleased material is of a surprisingly high standard, whether originals in the same mold as the singles ("I'm Miserable") or covers of ...

Two discs and 34 tracks of Mike Paradinas productions is a lot to churn through, especially for fans growing used to a much slower rate of release from the producer who made the game of follow-the-alias such fun during the '90s. Beginning with 2000's Full Sunken Breaks, Paradinas ...
