The first grand-scale epic shot entirely in Technicolor. Fairbanks stars as Michel, the sole survivor of a ship pillaged by buccaneers. The silent film also stars Billie Dove, directed by Albert Parker. Special features inlcude 19 minutes of rare outtake footage, audio commentary by Rudy Behlmer. This swashbuckling nautical adventure, starring the incomparable Douglas Fairbanks, made film history as one of the first full features shot entirely in Technicolor. Here, he plays a nobleman who wants to revenge his father's murder, so he boards a pirate vessel disguised as one of the thieving, villainous rapscallions, and sets about achieving his goal. On the high seas, the athletic Fairbanks provides a no-holds barred, rip-roaring, stunt-filled voyage -- complete with a one-man takeover of a merchant ship. THE BLACK PIRATE was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1993.
THE BLACK PIRATE was the first feature film shot in 2-strip Technicolor, but many surviving copies are in black & white.
According to Variety, Elton Thomas (who came up with the film's story) was actually Fairbanks himself.

$15.45 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's shooting are laced with legendary incidents, such as the time Herzog reportedly held a gun to Kinski's head to get him to finish a scene. Whatever transpired ...

$9.79 Sydney (Philip Baker Hall), a mysterious professional gambler, befriends John (John C. Reilly), a young man in trouble, and teaches him the ways of making a living in the casinos of Reno. John gets involved with Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a pretty waitress who doubles as a prostitute, and Jimmy (Samuel L. Jackson), a two-faced criminal. When trouble erupts, suddenly Sydney has to rescue his young friend, but a secret from his past threatens to destroy everything he has tried to build up.
Director Paul Thomas Anderson's highly acclaimed debut feature (based on the films of Jonathan Demme and John Cassavetes) is a tight, intricate film noir character study with a more disciplined plot than his later, more expansive films. The film also features excellent work from his four actors, particularly Hall as the experienced, world-weary Sydney, and fascinating details about the lowlife world the characters ...

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano on fire, and another gets him to wear a glow-in-the-dark condom, allowing him to engage in a condom duel with her jealous, similarly clad rock-star boyfriend. Eventually, Zach turns to fatherly bartender Barney (Vince Gardenia), who should have long ago cut off his bar tab, and psychiatrist Dr. Westford (choreographer Michael Kidd), and both tell him to stop destroying himself through drink. Ritter rings some surprisingly complex changes in the wildly farcical film, and, in the condom battle, participates in one of the ...

$10.49 The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.

$7.19 In this classic screwball comedy, Carole Lombard plays Hazel Flagg, a small-town girl who pretends to be dying from radium poisoning so she can win a free trip to New York City. Fredric March plays Wally Cook, the big-city newspaper reporter who sets up the plan by breaking the story and then complicates matters when he falls for Hazel. The result is a marvelous satire, directed by William Wellman and featuring terrific performances from the two leads as well as Charles Winninger and Walter Connolly. Carole Lombard offers up an ironic monologue about the beauty of dying ...

$15.59 BABY GENIUSES: When two doctors (Kathleen Turner and Christopher Lloyd) set out to dominate the world once they discover they can crack the code to a secret baby language, it is only two-year-old Sly and his twin brother Whit who can stop them. When their first attempt fails and Sly gets captured, Whit rallies a group of foster babies at the home for special children to rescue Sly and squash the doctor's evil plot. Goofy comedy will appeal to those with a taste for the unusual. Directed by Bob Clark (A CHRISTMAS STORY, PORKY'S.)
SUPERBABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2: Combining several different genres (action, sci-fi, comedy, family) to tell one truly outrageous tale, SUPERBABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2 introduces audiences to another set of hyper-smart toddlers who are out to conquer evil. This time around, evil presents itself in the form of Bill Biscane (Jon Voight), a German mass-media giant who is out to brainwash children all over the world through his seemingly innocent television show. But before he gets his chance, a figure from Biscane's past shows up to torment him once again. His name is Kahuna, and although he's pint-sized, he's got the brains and tools to battle his arch-nemesis. This time around, Kahuna must rely on four members of Stan (Scott Baio) and Jean (Vanessa Angel) Bobbins's nursery to help him save the day: Archie, Finkleman, Rosita, and Alex. Featuring a hilariously campy performance from Jon Voight, Clark's ...

$7.49 Based on the book by J. Randy Taraborelli, the NBC mini-series JACKIE, ETHEL, JOAN: THE KENNEDY WOMEN delves into the personal lives of the women who married into the famous American family. Focusing on the twenty-year period between John F. Kennedy's election to the presidency in 1960 and Ted Kennedy's failed bid for the presidential nomination in 1980, WOMEN OF CAMELOT tells the story of how these three very different women dealt with the pressures of public life, the marital infidelities of their husbands, and the tragedies that plagued the Kennedy family. Despite their differences and occasional internal bickering, these three sister-in-laws support each other through births, miscarriages, deaths, affairs, assassinations, alcoholism, and accidents, and offer virtually unconditional support to both their husbands and the Kennedy family. Poignant, recognizable moments in Kennedy and American history are recreated with the addition ...
