Based on Nathanael West's satirical novel, John Schlesinger's THE DAY OF THE LOCUST is an absorbing look at the desperate characters who populate the Hollywood film industry. Idealistic young set designer Tod Hackett (William Atherton) travels to 1930s-era Hollywood to find fame and fortune but encounters a dismal world of broken people, shattered dreams, and phoney healers pandering to the lost. He soon falls in love with aspiring actress Faye Greener (Karen Black), a cruel, manipulative woman who lives with her drunken father (Burgess Meredith, in an Oscar-nominated performance) and loves the strange man-child Homer Simpson (Donald Sutherland). Their passions collide at a disastrous Hollywood premiere that remains one of the most horrifying and tragic climaxes in film history.

"The Day of the Locust" was originally a project for Warner Bros., but was picked up and released by Paramount Pictures. Original producer Ronald Shedlo received a presentation credit in the finished film. The San Bernardino Arms apartment complex seen in the film is a studio set for a structure that is just two blocks from the Paramount lot. Additional cast: Dick Powell Jr. (Dick Powell). Color by Technicolor, though Movielab is credited for the print work.

Day Of The Locust Reviews:

"...In many ways remarkable....A panoramic movie..."-- Vincent Canby, New York Times

"Bristling with brilliant scenes....It lurches between satire and the truly horrifying." -- Uncut Staff, Uncut

Like driving past a motorway pile up; you try not to look at the tradgedy unfolding before you, yet find yourself strangley drawn. The Day of The Locust is the film equivalent of a car accident. Set in 1930s Hollywood, the entertainment capital of the world, we are stuck with the showbiz losers, the wannabees and the never ever gonnabees; Karen Black etc. Donald Sutherland should have walked away with an Oscar for his portrayal of halfwitted Homer Simpson (not the fat bald yellow fella of the same name) however, unfortunately for Sutherland and director John Schlesinger, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest came out at the same time (1975) and walked away with 'Best' everything. I forgot how graphic the scene with the little girl at the end was; not for the faint-hearted. A grotesque, dark, unassuming and spectacular film. A definate one for the collection of any discerning film lover. Bri

Day Of The Locust review

With a stellar cast that includes two Academy Award winners--namely, Judy Dench and Ian McKellen--this lavish production of Shakespeare's MACBETH is a great way to experience the classic play. Known as "The Scottish Play," the story follows the trials and tribulations of Macbeth (McKellan) as he becomes entangled in murderous schemes by his wife, Lady Macbeth (Dench), but succumbs to horrific nightmares and visions during his ascension to the throne. Once crowned King of Scotland, Macbeth's terrible feelings of guilt prove to be his downfall. Powerful and moving in equal measures, this is a wonderful way to experience the rightly-lauded play. A Spanish-language version of the magical, classic Disney fairy tale, BLANCANIEVES is a Princess forced to flee from her jealous stepmother. Lost in the woods, she encounters a group of friendly dwarves who take her in. She finds happiness with them, caring for their little cottage while they work in the mines. Each one has a unique personality that the Princess is able to find lovable, but when the evil Queen learns of her whereabouts, even the strength of the dwarves devotion cannot save her. Cast under a spell of eternal sleep, Snow White's Prince Charming is the only one who can rescue her. This is one of the first animated features ever made, and its timeless, enchanting charm is as mesmerizing today as it was in 1937. Dubbed into Spanish. Here is the classic children's story of "Snow White & The Seven Dwarves" presented in a feature film. DVD extras section includes a trivia game. Features audio in English and Spanish. An ambitious labor of love from writer/director/star Emilio Estevez, BOBBY attempts to distill the hope, anger, and confusion that gripped the U.S. in the late 1960s. With the civil rights movement still reeling from the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the country embroiled in the confusion of Vietnam, Senator Robert F. Kennedy's campaign preached a message of peace and tolerance. In a style similar to the sprawling works of Robert Altman or Paul Thomas Anderson, Estevez uses the June 4th, 1969, assassination of Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles as the means to take a snapshot of the problems facing the country as the 1960's came to an end. The hotel is a microcosm of class and race, with characters bouncing off each other until the violent conclusion. African-American head chef Edward (Laurence Fishburne) presides over a kitchen staffed primarily by Mexican Americans who are the victims of the racist restaurant manager, Timmons (Christian Slater). Timmons is reprimanded by hotel manager Paul Ebbers (William H. Macy), who is having an affair with a switchboard operator (Heather Graham) behind the back of his beautician wife (Sharon Stone). Meanwhile, a young Diane (Lindsay Lohan) prepares to marry her classmate, William (Elijah Wood), in order to save him from going to Vietnam, and two collegiate campaigners for Senator Kennedy remove their ties to take their first LSD trip, courtesy of a resident hippie drug dealer (Ashton Kutcher). Though the sheer volume of characters--and celebrities portraying them--is often overwhelming, Estevez is deft at making each plot thread convincing and involving. Though BOBBY is not a biopic and will in no way be mistaken for the definitive statement on the man or his life and times, it is thoroughly adept at distilling both his message and the time in which he fought to deliver it.
