Animated; Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English This release from the animated Bible-inspired VEGGIETALES series puts an Easter twist on the classic Dickens tale. Veggietales - An Easter Carol video
$10.89 Long associated with the New York avant-garde scene, Anderson often works with her friends from the art set. Such artists as David van Tiegham, Anton Fier, Lenny Pickett, and Bobby McFerrin all perform on STRANGE ANGELS. The album's highlights include the keyboard/vocal combination of "The Dream Before," a sad song about Hansel and Gretel. Anderson imagines the fabled children after their infamous witch episode. Living in Berlin and unable to relate to one another without an adversary, history simply passes them by. The peaceful "Hiawatha," a spaciously-produced song, references Elvis Presley while gently proclaiming "Starlight, starbright, we're gonna hang some new stars in the heavens tonight."
1989's STRANGE ANGELS, Laurie Anderson's first studio album since 1984's MR. HEARTBREAK, is something of a change from her previous records. For the first time, the majority of the songs are actually sung (or at least talk-sung), not spoken, and they reveal Anderson to have a fine, smooth singing voice. Her odd, customary story interludes are not omitted. They are merely shorter, integrated with ...
| | Diamanda Galas Plague Mass (1984 End Of The Epidemic) CD (1991)
Veggietales - An Easter Carol film
$10.69 Diamanda Galas, who has been known for both her own work and as a singer of extremely demanding modern scores, created this heart-wrenching cry about the physical suffering caused by the AIDS plague being compounded by the shameful arrogance of self-appointed moralists. Maintaining an incredible intensity and depth for over an hour's solo vocal (recorded live at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC, with suitably minimal band and electronics backup), Galas proceeds through Mahalia Jackson-influenced spiritual singing, saxophone-like wails, to dramatic dialogues in many dialects and languages ("there are no more tickets to the funeral") to engrossing Portuguese fado singing to taking on the attributes of Satan (in "Sono L'Antichristo," "I Am the Anti-Christ") in order to challenge the concept of a vengeful, instead of compassionate deity (and society), much as Nina Simone did in her controversial song "God Is a Killer" in the '60s. The Mass ends with the heartfelt lyrics "I go to sleep each evening now dreaming of the grave and see the friends I used to know calling out my name. O Lord Jesus, do you think I've served my time ?." At times, the singing is "self-indulgent," but, oh well. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny
Recorded live on October 12-13, 1990 at The Cathedral Of St. John The Divine, New York. Includes liner notes ...
| | Krisiun Conquerors Of Armageddon CD (2000)
Veggietales - An Easter Carol review
$8.99 Krisiun is not a band that puts a lot of emphasis on experimenting or on trying to achieve a radically original sound. Instead, they just keep on honing their attack, focusing on making their music even faster and heavier (to the narrow extent that that is possible). Conquerors of Armageddon is their third official album, and it is basically just a bigger and (arguably) better version of what you hear on their first two: Morbid Angel-influenced death metal that overflows with blasting drumbeats, guttural guitar/bass riffs, growled-out vocals, and completely over-the-top guitar solos. For those keeping score, this album may not be quite as fast as Black Force Domain, their official debut, but it's still extremely fast. More importantly, though, the production is the best to date on a Krisiun recording -- it's fuller and more clearly defined than before, although still without being slick -- and the songwriting has also improved -- "Hatred Inherit," "Soul Devourer," and "Iron Stakes" are all expertly constructed ...

| | Tone-Loc Loc-Ed After Dark CD (1989)
Veggietales - An Easter Carol movie DVD
$9.65 A forgotten man in the rise of West Coast rap, Tone-Loc was effectively cut off from his hometown scene in Los Angeles by his unexpected pop success. Paced by the singles "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" -- both co-written by a pre-fame Young MC, and some of the earliest productions by the legendary Dust Brothers -- Loc's debut album, Loc-ed After Dark, became the second rap album to top the pop charts, following the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill. Loc's distinctively rough, raspy voice and easygoing delivery made him an appealing storyteller, but he was aiming for the streets more than the pop charts. So there's the occasional profanity, the stalker-tinged title track, and "Cheeba Cheeba," which made waves at the time as one of the earliest pro-marijuana raps on record (of course, this was before Cypress Hill, and Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign was still fresh in the public's mind). The minor singles "I Got It Goin' On" and "On Fire" (the latter the first record ever released on Delicious Vinyl) ...

Veggietales - An Easter Carol review
$6.25 A writer for the television series TALES FROM THE CRYPT decided to concoct a similar film for children ranging in age from 6 to 11, a group that doesn't have many real horror movies tailored especially for them. In place of the "Crypt Keeper," a countrified talking corpse with a bushy moustache dubbed "Gator Butt Willie" introduces ...

Veggietales - An Easter Carol DVD
$18.55 One of the bands that best captured the carefree yet often turbulent spirit of the late 1960s was Creedence Clearwater Revival. Conducted by Creedence bassist Stu Cook, and incorporating rarely seen archival film from concerts and television, this revealing and entertaining study of the band reexamines their output and its place in '60s musical history, along the way featuring performances of many of their best-known songs, ...
