After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

At times, it was hard to figure out whether Berlin were an average synth pop band trying to carve out their own niche or just a mediocre rock band jumping on the new wave bandwagon. Sure, they had some good singles and radio hits, but as an album band, they left a lot to be desired. Terri Nunn was beautiful and sexy, but it seemed like Berlin wanted to be more than just a commercial band with a hot vocalist: they seemed to be striving for greatness but settled for "that'll do." Unfortunately, they never had a chance to really prove themselves, breaking up after their commercially disappointing Count Three & Pray album, released in 1986. Nunn has kept the Berlin name alive over the years, touring with a different group of musicians and playing all the hits while releasing the occasional studio or live album. With a recorded output that seems to dwindle in quality with every release, one might hope that All the Way In would deviate from the standard "live hits" collection and offer up something really special. Sadly, that's not entirely the case. All the Way In was recorded live at The House of Blues in Anaheim, CA. The HOB is located very near the heart of the OC music scene, where Berlin started more than two decades ago. This homecoming show promised much but delivered very little.

On her second album, SHADOWLAND, k.d. Lang matched up with legendary producer Owen Bradley on a record that simultaneously channeled the essence of Patsy Cline and helped Bradley recover from a recent illness. Switching up after her more uptempo debut ANGEL WITH A LARIAT, Lang left her back-up band The Reclines at home for SHADOWLAND, and instead went into the studio with session vets that included the Jordanaires, Buddy Emmons and Hargus "Pig" Robbins. Her use of the Nashville String Machine put a new spin on songs such as "Black Coffee" and the title track.
Lang's rich timbre of voice is coupled with extraordinary range. She turns Chris Isaak's "Western Stars" and Ray Price's "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes" into cowboy ballads worthy of Marty Robbins, puts a Minnie Pearlish spin on "(Waltz Me) Once Again Around The Dance Floor" and makes Roger Miller's "Lock, Stock And Teardrops" ooze with pathos. By far the crown jewel of this record is the "Honky Tonk Angels' Medley" of "In The Evening," "You Nearly Lose Your Mind" and "Blues Stay Away From Me" wherein Lang matches up well with legendary honky-tonk angels Kitty Wells, Brenda Lee and Loretta Lynn.
