Within Temptation presents MOTHER EARTH featuring 14 live and studio tracks including "Ice Queen" and "Dark Wings."
Somewhere between opera and Metallica lies Dutch goth-metal juggernaut Within Temptation. With ethereal banshee Sharon Den Adel on vocals and a bed of string-laden orchestration, Within Temptation has constructed a shockingly popular (at least in their home country) storm of gaudy, complex rock. Their platinum second album, MOTHER EARTH, contains their greatest commercial triumph, the smash single "Ice Queen," a steamroller of strings, synths, and crunching guitars. It also contains folk-inflected ballads like "Never-Ending Story," perfect for role-playing boys and shy Dutch girls at Ren Faires.
CD contains 4 bonus tracks.
Includes 4 bonus tracks: "Restless", "Bittersweet", "Enter (Live At Utrecht 1998)", & "The Dance (Live At Utrecht 1998)".Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "[A] dazzling record of immense vision and overpowering grandiose splendor." Within Temptation Mother Earth Songs Mother Earth Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Title Track is the Highlight I thought I was getting something like a Dutch Nightwish, when actually this is a closer relation to The Gathering. Not very metallic, more moody and gothic, with some heavy elements. Sharon Den Adel is a more than capable vocalist, but is incredibly pitchy and screechy at times. When she calms down and sings a pretty ballad - especially “Never-Ending Story” and “In Perfect Harmony,” her voice is quite beautiful and moving. But on the whole, it’s just too lukewarm for my tastes. If you're looking for something nicely textured but not overly heavy, this is your cup o' tea. The title track is awesome, and at the time I am writing this, you can catch the streaming video for it on their website. Submitted by don.taylor (Concord, NH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Excellent Very atmospheric and beautiful metal. Only sinlge complaint is the over-development of some of the songs. But it's a minor complaint. When you're in the right mood for it, this album is perfect. Submitted by Duncan (Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.39 Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi more than hold their own, pumping choppy riffs into the 1980s-sounding "Self Deception" and the simmering opener "Swamped." What makes Lacuna Coil so unique in an often musically conservative ...

Mother Earth music CDs
$13.49 Racer X's debut album, Street Lethal, established the band as little more than a vehicle for guitarist Paul Gilbert's virtuosic neo-metal soloing style. For its sophomore release, Second Heat, Racer X ups the intensity of its already terrifying instrumental attack by adding second guitarist Bruce Bouillet to the fold, thereby enabling some of the most amazing dual-guitar work ever recorded. What's more, the band has become more cohesive and have even penned some catchy songs with worthwhile melodies. Second Heat's overall style follows the well-established Judas Priest/Van Halen template (they even cover a Priest tune, "Heart of a Lion"), but each song is punctuated with detailed pyrotechnical touches from the guitarists, and the rest of the band, for ...

$36.09 Finnish band Amorphis are a gloom-laden metal band whose appeal has expanded beyond the cluttered Scandinavian hard rock scene. FAR FROM THE SUN is an 11-song demonstration of their talents.
Listeners who found Am Universum too indulgent and jazzy will be happy to find that Far From the Sun is a streamlined rocker in comparison. At their best, Amorphis have carved great, twisting metallic riffs from the building blocks of Finnish ...
| | Armageddon CD (1975) Remastered; Digipak
Mother Earth CD music
$16.29 Cynics who perceive many super-groups as nothing more than bloated extrapolations of, at times, perfectly mundane musical components, can back up their assumptions with Armageddon's eponymous debut from 1975. The first and final spawn of the would-be-super-group featuring former Yardbird vocalist Keith Relf, erstwhile Captain Beyond drummer Bobby Caldwell, ex-Steamhammer guitarist Martin Pugh, and Relf's Renaissance partner, bassist Louis Cennamo, the album contains a meager five tracks -- four of which extend beyond the eight-minute barrier due to bouts of arguably unnecessary, self-indulgent waffling. On the other hand, this was the '70s, people, and of course this sort of excess was par for the course, back then. What's more, these same dubious qualities actually contributed to the album's eventual adoption as a precursor to the stoner rock movement by dope fiends everywhere, most of whom rarely heard a lengthy jam session they couldn't nod approvingly to. Whatever one's opinion, the quartet's admirable pedigree unquestionably yielded some inspired songwriting, and even memorable improvisational moments within driving opener "Buzzard," the gently whimsical post-psych ballad "Silver Tightrope," and the 11-minute, prog rock ...
