Count Basie album
$14.80 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Count Basie CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes ...

So it's no surprise that with the 2008 holiday season in full swing, Connick returns with his third holiday record, the sprightly WHAT A NIGHT! A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. As it is ...

| | Hollywood Rocks! CDs (2005) Box Set
Count Basie songs
$40.49 2003 saw the release of the book Hollywood Rocks -- a 208-pager that documents the wild and crazy days of the west coast glam metal movement circa the 1980s. Two years later, the folks at Cleopatra/Deadline Records have compiled a four-disc follow-up to the book, Hollywood Rocks: Audio Companion. If you're looking to relive the days or yore or are simply a newcomer to the genre, this 78-track set is quite a mammoth find. But be forewarned -- if you're expecting tracks from such leaders of the pack as Guns N' Roses and Mötley Crüe, you're out of luck (although there is a track from the pre-G N' R, Axl Rose-led Hollywood Rose). Also, for the most part, Hollywood Rocks focuses on demos and uncommon versions -- hence, the sound quality isn't always the best. Regardless, the box remains highly recommended for those who were part of the Aqua Net set. Kicking things off with a track from the aforementioned Hollywood Rose ("Killing Time"), the first disc, which covers the early '80s, proves to be the best of the bunch. After all, it includes tracks by such recognizable names as Ratt ("In Your Direction"), Dokken ("It's Not Love"), W.A.S.P. ("Animal"), and Quiet Riot ("Let's Get Crazy"). But if you were a reader of such esteemed metal publications as Hit Parader back in the '80s, there was a multitude of bands you read about, ...
| | Henry Perry Effortless CD (2006)
Count Basie album
$14.79 ABOUT HENRY PERRY, EFFORTLESS. AN ALBUM ON CDThanks for stopping by. If youâre here by chance or by design- we think youâll enjoy what youâve found. Here you have found something redeeming, comforting and familiar. Maybe even earth shattering. Earth shattering in that we believe it will redeem your faith in what your heart and soul know is good. Most of us know what it is like to buy a new piece of music from where ever, (on CD, tape, LP, holographic crystal, etc.) then get it home; grab a drink, unwrap it, put it on the appropriate machine, snap on the headphones, then press the play button. Youâd begin to drink in the sounds and get lost in the songs while soaking up every word and symbol in the album insert. The thank youâs, the acknowledgments, the players and producers, the composers and guest artists, the studios and the cities, the âtechâ guyâs, and then most importantly- the lyrics. The words to the songs. Even instrumental tracks have a way of singing! You were in love with that experience. So are we. And we, (the production team of Perry/Murphy) hope to measure up to that experience with this Effort- Henry Perry, Effortless. The package (a CD) is only important in that it holds all the parts of an album. This is an album on CD, not a CD. An album is a collection of valuable things. With us, âthe song is the thingâ. Familiar themes yes, but new ideas and unique ways of saying âhello, goodbye, I love you, get lost, and where the hell am I anyway?âMan, was this ever fun. From a to z, it took more time to complete than we had planned, and it âmorphedâ several times into itâs final form. The process of making an album is exhilarating and the album title âEffortlessâ ironically betrays that process. No pain, no gain. But we loved it all! This is an independent artist album. Self-produced, with all original songs, save for the use of a well-known traditional hymn rearranged somewhat, and melded into the âoutroâ of the final song on the record. A bit of last moment inspiration that brought the whole collection home.Who do I / We sound like? I can only answer that question by telling you the names of the artistâs we respect and adore: Bacharach and David, Jarreau, Franks, Jimmy Webb, Fagen and Becker, Wonder, Luther, Marvin, John and Taupin- to name a dozen. All singers and writers!I, Henry, live with my family in Los Angeles where I am a sales-rep by day and a singer songwriter by night. David P. Murphy hails from Hastings, Ne., formerly of L.A. via Omaha, Ne. where we were both born and raised. We flew the friendly skies, and taking advantage of new technology we âminedâ the web using Digidesignâs Pro-Tools to record most of the tracks. The early tracks were recorded and mixed using ADAT in Glendale and L.A. The final songs were recorded and mixed in/at/from Davidâs âExceedingly Pleasant Studiosâ ...
