The original 1968 horror film from director George A. Romero in an all-new hi-def Divimax transfer with new bonus features, including audio commentary with director Romero and Special Effects creator Tom Savini,.

Director George Romero's tongue-in-cheek sequel to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is so grotesque that it achieves a kind of comic bliss. In the modern cathedral of materialism, a shopping mall, flesh-eating zombies browse for more victims. Four horrified survivors fend off the gruesome shoppers as the mall fills with the once-living.

Picking up where NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD left off, and still offering no explanation of why the dead are walking the earth, DAWN OF THE DEAD plunges headlong into one of the most violent and original horror films ever made. After securing an apartment building overcome with flesh-eating zombies, two Philadelphia area SWAT team members, Peter (Ken Foree) and Roger (Scott Reiniger), flee to a television station, where they escape in the station's helicopter with Francine (Gaylen Ross) and Stephen (David Emge), two station employees. Seeking refuge from the zombies and the ensuing hysteria, they land on top of a Pittsburgh area shopping mall, despite the fact that the undead seem to be flocking there. What begins as a stop for supplies becomes a longer stay as the four become embroiled in a futile war within the mall to keep their flesh to themselves and remain alive. The film's relentlessly disturbing and innovative gore effects are one reason to see DAWN OF THE DEAD, but those who can stomach the endless barrage of blood and gnarled zombie faces will be rewarded--and possibly surprised--by what the film says about human nature and life within a consumer-based culture. Any aficionado of horror is likely to place the film high on their list of revered cinema.

Theatrical release: April 10, 1979 (USA). DAWN OF THE DEAD went into production in November 1977, with a budget of $1.5 million. The mall sequences were filmed at the Monroeville Mall in Monroeville, PA. The tenement scenes were shot in Pittsburgh's Hill District, the area upon which the TV series HILL STREET BLUES was based. Several versions of the film exist, as a result of the censorship policies of different countries. The editing of the 121-minute Italian version was supervised by co-producer Dario Argento. Director George Romero makes a cameo appearance in the television station at the beginning of the film. Gore maestro Tom Savini appears as the leader of a biker gang who is eviscerated by zombies in the shopping mall. Most of the 143 storeowners in the mall allowed their stores to be photographed in the film.

Dawn Of The Dead Quotes/Excerpts:

"Some kind of instinct. Memory of what used to be. This was an important place in their lives."--Steve Andrews (David Emge) on why the zombies are flocking to the mall

Dawn Of The Dead Reviews:

"...DAWN pummels the viewer with a series of ever-more-grisly events....Romero's strong suit is pacing and technical fluidity. His film has a keen visual sense that tersely extracts the maximum from all the bloodletting..." -- Sege., Variety

"Fundamentally satirical, DAWN also has an essential -- but rarely remarked upon -- sadness." -- Chris Willman, Entertainment Weekly

"Romero himself is said to prefer this tauter version, which balances its low-budget gore with a sharp satire on consumer society..." -- James Bell, Sight and Sound

"[S]till highly effective, and as slyly funny as gory." -- Peter Hogan, Uncut

4 stars Tex from Texas you moron
Tex from Texas, Your review is rediculous and your attack on Dawn 04 is largely unfounded. True, Dawn 79 had more to say as regards consumerism and social delemmas but Dawn 04 from the offset never set out to eclypse these comments made so well by Romero. Instead Dawn 04 set out to make it's own mark via a storyline slightly askew to the original, effects that make a Marilyn Manson video seem tame, and acting that is as good if not better to the original. As for the social commnentary, I suggest you see Dawn 04 at least twice again before shooting from the hip and reacting in such a spasmodic and infantile way as the movie does have several things to say if the viwer chooses to look and listen hard enough. Dawn 04 may not be a classic but it is an extremely enjoyable zombie movie and I for one will be buying the DVD once available.

4 stars Dawn DiviMax DVD - umm....
Cutting to the chase, this is probably the best version both technically and theatrically you are likely to find. The guys at Anchorbay have done it yet again with great visual quality and superb audio. 'Divi-netly the one for me'. ....However, technical quality aside, I cannot but compare the overall package to the previous Anchorbay releases such as 'Day of the Dead' or 'Near Dark'. Sad to say that even though this is the 25th anniversary edition it's lacking something awful in it's overal content. Yes, it has the trailers and the audio commentary, but there could have been so much more put on a second disc. I don't mean to be cynical but how many attempts does it take to release a good version? Two should be enough. This is Dawns 3rd dvd attempt and it's still not perfect for a movie with such a history. Where are the actor interviews, effects/HyperMarket documentaries and all the other fluff that make the whole event fun? Are we gonna have to buy the Ultimate dvd again? Overall the disc (singular) is a slight let down, but certainly not a total dissapointment. I thought however they might have thrown in a booklet a little longer than the one flap yoke they included (Is there something larger planned up ahead maybe???) So overall, this is the penultimate release that none the less eclipses the past releases (perhaps). With all respect to George, I thought the directors cut could have been better. The dvd 'is' worthy of purchase, it's just not what could have been, thus 4 stars in place of 5. Jedd.

The third chapter in the saga that director George Romero started in 1968 with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD moves the story further along the timeline of the zombie apocalypse to a time when survivors are few and far between. At an underground Florida research station, Dr. Logan (Richard Liberty) conducts grotesque experiments on captured zombies to search for a way that the living and the living dead can cohabitate. Begrudgingly sharing the facility with the doctor is military man Rhodes (Joe Pilato) and his underlings. Scientist Sarah (Lori Cardille) and her fellow survivors seek refuge at the compound just in time to see a clash between Logan and Rhodes reach a critical turning point. DAY OF THE DEAD stands as the most controversial film in the series. While some feel that its confined, talky nature prevents it from achieving the constant white-knuckle thrills of the previous two films, others admire its strides toward figuring out what drives the zombies. Regardless, the third act features the most extreme and well-executed special effects in the series, with several ...

Dawn Of The Dead DVD
DVD $17.39  3 stars
Tadanobu Asano and Joe Odagiri star as two friends who work part-time in a laundry factory in Kiyoshi Kurosawa's highly original BRIGHT FUTURE. Odagiri is Yuji Nimura, a messy, lazy slacker who has odd dreams at night of a future of hope and peace. His best friend, Mamoru Arita (Asano), meanwhile, is obsessed with his pet red jellyfish, a poisonous creature he is training to be able to survive in fresh water. After mysteriously presenting the marine invertebrate to Yuji, he even more mysteriously viciously murders his boss and willingly accepts his fate. While Mamoru is in prison, Yuji grows attached to the jellyfish and to his friend's estranged father, who repairs old televisions, radios, and lamps in his own cluttered shop. The very busy Asano (ICHI THE KILLER, THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI, LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE) and Odagiri are excellent in the lead roles, filled with a quiet ennui and disassociation from the rest of the world. Longtime actor Tatsuya Fuji provides outstanding support as Mr. Arita, who becomes a kind of surrogate father to Yuji. Kurosawa, the director of such successful thrillers as DOPPELGANGER, PULSE, and CURE, here alternates between beautifully shot scenes and grainy set pieces, steady camerawork and handheld moments, keeping the audience perpetually off balance yet mesmerized. BRIGHT FUTURE, which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, is a slow-paced, introspective, intelligent film that has a dark underbelly lurking just beneath it, like the potential lethal bite of a jellyfish. This film stars a ...
