| | Break The Silence Near Life Experience CD Break The Silence Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Featuring 88 Fingers Louie, Rise Against, and All Else Fails vets, Chicago's Break the Silence breaks little new ground on Near Life Experience in spite of its pedigree. Swaying from Epitaph Records-styled melodic punk like "Iris" to textbook emo like "Drawbridge" and onto metalcore mayhem in time for a tributary cover of At the Gates' "Slaughter of the Soul," the group has a fine understanding of punk subgenres, but suffers from an apparent identity crisis. That's not to say these guys can't play -- guitarist Dan Precision tears it up on the standout anthem "Six Foot Revolver" and vocalist Dan Wintercorn is a strong vocalist with a wide range -- but Break the Silence risks alienating the picky punk audience it is trying to reach by dabbling in too many styles to really please anyone. ~ John D. Luerssen

| | Curtis Mayfield Curtis CD (1970) Deluxe Edition
Near Life Experience CD music
$9.09 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as ...

Near Life Experience music CDs
$12.59 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and ...
| | Darkest Hour Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation CD (2003)
Near Life Experience songs
$10.85 On Darkest Hour's third album, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, it should come as no surprise that the lyrics are as vitriolic as the vocal timbre, decrying and describing a society where guns, violence, and malevolent media rule. The band rolls through twisted grindcore progressions in the background with reasonable aplomb. The album unexpectedly concludes with an uncharacteristic instrumental, "Veritas, Aequitas," whose piano, acoustic guitar, and air-guitar-hero soloing come as nothing less than a total shock after the mayhem of the preceding eight tracks. ~ Richie ...
| | From First To Last Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Body Count CD (2004)
Near Life Experience album
$11.69 Since the early 2000s, what's now known as post-hardcore has been consistently codified into something eminently marketable. Screaming bloody murder over churning angular guitars has suddenly salable qualities, as long as the rage is offset by whimpering pianos and heart-flailing harmonies. This systemization isn't necessarily bad, as the groups it affects often make very arresting music. But that doesn't mean ...

| | Ambrosia Anthology CD (1997)
Near Life Experience music CDs
$6.29 For various legal reasons, no Ambrosia recordings were released on compact disc in America until 1997's Anthology, and while it's an imperfect collection, it does offer a reasonably thorough overview of the group's career. It only briefly touches on their early art rock records, choosing to concentrate instead on their early-'80s soft rock hits like "Biggest Part of Me," "You're the Only Woman," and "How Much I Feel." As a result, dedicated prog rock fans will find this collection inadequate, but for most casual listeners, it will contain everything they need and then some, since the disc is padded with three new songs that are pleasant. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
