| | Tribute To The Beastie Boys CD (1 Customer Review)
You know that perpetually over-served group of dudes with the room at the end of your floor in college? The ones you watched transition from suburban preppies to Frisbee-playing hippies to eager hip-hop heads in the space of one fall semester? Well, Tribute to the Beastie Boys is the album they made in their spare time. The stand-ins for King Ad-Rock, MCA, and Mike D. overcompensate wildly as the music earnestly, if misguidedly, interprets material spanning the trio's entire career. While it's as much a cash-in as any of these quickie tribute albums, Beastie fans might get a kick out of these guys' attempts. From "Shake You Rump" and "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn," through "Tough Guy" and "Intergalactic," the experience will be very similar to that night you watched those guys from the dorm rap drunkenly, and entirely too faithfully, along to a Beastie Boys' mix tape. ~ Johnny Loftus

A Caucasian rapper from Detroit, a Dr. Dre disciple with bright blonde hair--at first glance, Eminem seemed the unlikeliest of hip-hop stars. However, his debut, THE SLIM SHADY LP, contained clever rhymes and even the occasional innovation. His sophomore effort, THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP, proved that Eminem was no fluke, but instead a legitimate rap visionary.

Tribute To The Beastie Boys
$11.59 On THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma delves into the mystic with a musical fervor that transcends sampling technologies and popular dance beats. THE CROSS OF CHANGES is a serene yet supremely sensual musical synthesis that might best be characterized as new age hip-hop. Enigma's worldwide hit MCMXC A.D. was notable for, among other things, its use of Gregorian chants as samples in a heady techno mix, which inspired such delirious interest in this ancient music that The Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos are currently enjoying their own Top 10 hit--CHANT.
With THE CROSS OF CHANGES, Enigma's auteur Michael Cretu has ...
| | Johnny Gill CD (1990)
Tribute To The Beastie Boys
$6.79 Johnny Gill re-established himself as a solo artist in 1990, and he did so in tremendous fashion, recording an astonishing self-titled debut for Motown that brought together the hitmaking duos Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and L.A. & Babyface to produce an album chock-full of hits. The combination of these two duos was unprecedented. Along with Teddy Riley, they had dominated late-'80s urban radio, utterly and absolutely, churning out hit after hit after hit and co-defining the burgeoning new jack swing movement in the process. Gill likewise had recently experienced enormous success during the late '80s when, following two flat solo albums for Atlantic, he joined New Edition for its Heart Break album and its long run of hits, including "Can You Stand the Rain," a number one hit that featured him prominently. Thus it was only fitting that Motown's visionary teaming of these artists at their respective primes culminated in a set of wonderful songs, chief among them "Rub You the Right Way" (a Jam & Lewis production) and "My, My, My" (L.A. & Babyface). The former was a high-energy, pleading chart-stormer that infiltrated urban radio with brute force and sent Gill straight up the charts in the process; the song furthermore became a coast-to-coast club favorite -- and remained so for years upon years afterward, standing tall as one of the definitive ...
