Alan Jackson - Greatest Video Hits Volume II (Disc 2) video
$14.49 Lyrics translated from the Spanish by Guillermo Hernandaz, Yolanda Zepeda and Jaime Nicolopulos.
Following on from his father Santiago Jimenez' own successful run as a conjunto musician in San Antonio, Flaco Jimenez put together a conjunto of his own in the '50s, eventually becoming one of the most famous figures in Tex-Mex music (also known as Musica Nortena in Mexico). Based on the polkas and waltzes Mexican performers refashioned as rancheras, the Tex-Mex conjunto style features accordion, the 12-string bajo sexto guitar, bass, and drums. Flaco immediately staked his claim in the music with a distinctly imaginative and lively accordion style, finding the ideal backing from equally able Tejano musicians, including his father and his son David. For this excellent 1985 recording, Flaco teams up with noted bandleader and bajo player Toby Torres, bassist Henry "Big Red" Ojeda, and drummer Isaac Garcia. The group works through a variety of song forms, including rancheras, boleros, danzons, and polkas. Along with a fine rendition of the ubiquitous "El Barrilito" ("Beer Barrel ...
| | Phil Alvin County Fair 2000 CD (1994)
Alan Jackson - Greatest Video Hits Volume II (Disc 2) film
$10.69 Brothers Phil and Dave Alvin were the heart of California roots-rockers the Blasters. After songwriter/guitarist Dave's departure for a solo career, Phil kept the group alive, but mostly on a local performance level, not as a recording unit. He released his first solo album in 1986, but it took him eight years to make another.
Like its predecessor, COUNTY FAIR finds Phil Alvin backed by a shifting cast of characters, exploring an eclectic batch of American roots styles, from blues to country to R&B and rockabilly. On several songs, he's backed by the '90s version of the Blasters, but Alvin goes further afield in collaborations with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and singer Mary Franklin. The solo efforts of each brother underline what the other brought to the Blasters; Dave's singing has never been described as mellifluous and songwriting is not really Phil's forte. The strongest cuts on COUNTY FAIR are those where ...

| | Booker T & The MG's Very Best Of Booker T. & The MG'S CD (1994)
Alan Jackson - Greatest Video Hits Volume II (Disc 2) DVD
$9.69 Rhino has done all music fans a favor by combining material from the two period-specific best-of compilations available (the early MG's Stax catalogue was sold to Atlantic, the later to Fantasy) on one 16-track set. The band's early singles, including "Groovin'," "Hip Hug-Her" and, of course, "Green Onions," are combined here with their late '60s hits such as "Hang 'em High" and "Time is Tight." Donald "Duck" Dunn and drummer Al Jackson's in-the-pocket locks, Steve Cropper's stinging guitar lines and Booker T. Jones' funkified organ create a sound that comes across as fresh and infectious today as it did in the ...

Alan Jackson - Greatest Video Hits Volume II (Disc 2) review
$10.75 Ostensibly a teen fright-fest about a vengeful ghost, WHISPERING CORRIDORS follows in the best horror tradition of using the supernatural for displaced social commentary. The film is an illustration of the growing gap in Korean society between the values of the youth and the older generations, focused around the misogyny and cutthroat competition in the educational system. It became a huge hit in its native country after word got out that the ministry of education wanted to ban it for its critical viewpoint. The plot concerns a series of grisly murders at an all-girls school, which the administration has ...

Alan Jackson - Greatest Video Hits Volume II (Disc 2) movie DVD
$16.19 This pair of jazz concerts offer a privileged look at some of big-band's greatest players. Included here are a 1962 Los Angeles concert by Stan Kenton and his orchestra, and a 1966 London concert by Benny Golson leading the British Orchestra, with Tubby Hayes on tenor sax.
NTSC/Region 0. The pairing of Stan Kenton (in a 19s performance) and Benny Golson (filmed in 1966) on this DVD might seem strange. However, all of the music heard on this DVD has a certain unity ...
