Another musical byproduct of our ever-shrinking global community, SHAKTI RHYTHMS takes the ancient, spiritually charged melodies of India's Tantric tradition and marries them to the rhythms and textures of contemporary Western electronica. In Tantra, Shakti is both Maya, the goddess of world illusion, and "mula prakriti," the basic building blocks of the universe. The double meaning of "Shakti" is inherent in the shifting sounds and musical forms of SHAKTI RHYTHMS. Tablas blend with drum programming to create a mesmerizing backdrop across which float sitar samples, extended vocal passages, and a host of textures and moods.
Curated by beloved yoga instructor Shiva Rea (and meant as a companion piece for her YOGA SHAKTI video), each track is crafted by a different programmer or DJ; a strategy that seems appropriate to the mysterious, multi-formed order of the project. Artists like Layne Redmond, Ian Sandler, and Midival Punditz bring Western and Eastern sensibilities together in a seamless musical union. Sometimes the sound of the union is ephemeral and meditative (as on Rara Avis's "707 Delight"), and sometimes it is sprightly and danceable (as on Spy from Cairo's "Zindagi"), but the whole is something unique, hypnotic, and suitable for tranced-out ambient listening and sustained, directed meditation.

Shakti Rhythms album
$11.99 Recorded between 1976 and 1990. Includes liner notes by Steven Ivory.
Without question, Jeffrey Osborne was one of the most polished and accomplished R&B vocalists of the '80s -- but his career also stretched back into the '70s, as he was the vocalist for the long-running funk ensemble L.T.D. This compilation includes those years, making it the most thorough greatest-hits survey of Osborne's career to date. Still, all of the great moments from his solo endeavors are what make this a truly worthwhile purchase. His biggest hits for A&M Records, like "On the Wings of Love" and "You Should Be Mine (The Woo ...

Shakti Rhythms album
$14.24 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and ...
