Best Of Grace Slick CD

Not to be confused with a more comprehensive compilation of the same name released in 1999 by RCA (or with an out of print Columbia LP of Great Society recordings), BMG Special Products' The Best of Grace Slick is a ten-track budget collection intended for the most casual of Slick fans. The singer made four solo albums between 1974 and 1984, but she is best known as a co-lead singer of Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship, and this selection reflects that. Six tracks, among them the Top Ten hits "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," come from Jefferson Airplane; one, "Fast Buck Freddie," is from Jefferson Starship; and two, the number one hits "We Built This City" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," are by Starship. Only one track on the album, the hard-rocking "Wrecking Ball" from the 1981 album Welcome to the Wrecking Ball, was released originally as a Grace Slick solo song. It might have been nice to give greater emphasis on a Grace Slick compilation to Grace Slick solo work, but cheap best-ofs are not about reconsidering an artist's work, they are about gathering that artist's biggest hits and best-known songs, and since Slick spent her entire career on labels owned by BMG, this one is able to fulfill that function. ~ William Ruhlmann
