| | Larry Gold Presents Don Cello And Friends CD (2003) (Import)
Soul Lounge, Vol. 1: The Vibe Compilation music CDs
$14.69 The concept behind Larry Gold Presents Don Cello and Friends isn't all that different from The Philadelphia Experiment or Quincy Jones albums like Back on the Block and Q's Jook Joint. Bringing together an impressive cast of soul legends and newer figures, Larry Gold -- the string arranger and cellist behind several Philly soul classics -- steps out from the background to produce this album with the help of several others. It's heavy on new versions of old songs, including a look at "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" (titled "No Stoppin'") that includes McFadden & Whitehead and a turn from the Roots' Black Thought. Though the younger contributors give the album a good supply of powerful energy, it's Bunny Sigler's turn on the modern-day ...
| | Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 CD (2003)
Soul Lounge, Vol. 1: The Vibe Compilation songs
$6.65 Hidden Beach Recordings' Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 is a sampler of unsigned artists assembled by Steve McKeever's custom label, which was put on the map by the success of hip-hop/rap/neo-soul artist Jill Scott. The selections are typical of the mix of African-American styles the label has promoted during its short life. Hidden Beach's company goal is to find ways to make rap and hip-hop acceptable to an older demographic (and thus more broadly popular) by infusing (or diluting) it with elements of soul and smooth jazz. It's a reasonable enough charter, but the compilation and release of Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 (no, none of them are actually hits) suggests that the company is hoping someone else -- radio, reviewers? -- will do its A&R work for it and help decide which of these unknown artists should be signed. Those who wish to take the bait are going to find that, not surprisingly, the compilers are better at identifying acceptable neo-soul ...

| | Rhian Benson Gold Coast CD (2003)
Soul Lounge, Vol. 1: The Vibe Compilation CD music
$11.49 The music of Rhian Benson is an exciting mélange of R&B, soul, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, and worldbeat. Her debut recording titled Gold Coast features the stunning vocalist interpreting 13 songs that she wrote and co-produced with James Poyser (Lauryn Hill, the Roots, Jill Scott) and Bob Power (D'Angelo, A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu). Her warm, jazz-influenced vocals are a natural result of her strong musical heritage (both of her parents are musicians) and by being nourished and encouraged by the profusion of music and musicians that surrounded her during her upbringing in Africa, India, and England. Gold Coast opens with "Words Hurt Too," a sad ballad about the insensitive remarks that can cause a great relationship to go wrong. Benson's sensitive interpretation captures the essence of heartbreak through her use of earthy blue notes and elongated rhythmic phrasings. Her voice is so unfeigned, and ...
| | John Cale Paris 1919 CD (1973)
Soul Lounge, Vol. 1: The Vibe Compilation music CDs
$10.39 PARIS 1919 is considered by many critics (and Cale fans) to be his best. Released in 1973, 1919 was recorded in Los Angeles with members of Little Feat, Wilton Felder and the UCLA Orchestra, and stands as one of the best "rock/classical" fusions, mainly because Cale (who is a classically-trained musician) avoids ...
