La Historia songs
$7.45 One linguistic myth is that anyone who speaks Spanish is automatically fluent in Italian; the languages are quite similar, but similar is by no means the same as identical. However, it is true that anyone who is fluent in Italian has a definite advantage if he or she wants to learn Spanish (and vice versa), which is why Italian pop star Laura Pausini mastered Spanish and is able to record the same album in both languages. The Italian-oriented Resta in Ascolto and its Spanish-language counterpart Escucha are the same album in two different languages, but once you get past the linguistic difference, it's clear that Pausini has provided the same 11 songs with the same tracks and the same arrangements in the same order. Styli
No stranger to success, Europop sensation Laura Pausini sold over 25 million albums in her first decade or so of recording, quite a feat for someone who was just turning 30 years old and had never broken into the lucrative English-language market. Yet she essentially struck out when she did try to cross over to that English-language market in 2002 with From the Inside. Put mildly, the album bombed stateside. Its qualities (and the qualities of stateside consumers) aside, it was the first full-fledged failure Pausini had experienced in a career of multi-million-selling albums and sold-out world tours. Here was someone who had sung for Pope John Paul II at Christmas and for Barbra Streisand at a birthday party, yet she couldn't sing for ordinary Americans, who just weren't interested in her melodramatic schmaltz. And so Pausini took a sizable break, perhaps the first of her whirlwind, world-conquering career. When she did finally emerge from her self-imposed silence, she returned with Escucha, her first Spanish-language album in four long years (not counting her best-of ...
| | Hermanas Padilla Mexicanismo CD (1992) Remastered
La Historia album
$10.09 Much in the manner of Dueto Las Palomas, sister act Las Hermanas Padilla was a distaff duo whose trademark harmonies made them an essential part of the world of traditional Mexican music. As such, it's only natural that they be included in the MEXICANISIMO series that honors the great old-school Mexican artists. Over the course of 15 tracks, ...

| | Willie Nelson Shotgun Willie CD (1973)
La Historia music CDs
$8.29 Principally recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios, New York.
Prior to his major success as a founding father of outlaw country (with Waylon Jennings), Nelson recorded for Atlantic. They were a record label who, among many things, were not renowned for country music. The production by Arif Mardin (with a little help from Jerry Wexler) has definite shades of southern soul and R&B. Nelson also has a great gift of singing in an incredibly unaffected way; he sings honestly as if he is singing for himself. This remarkable talent has endeared him to millions, and although this album failed to chart, it is one to return to, like an old friend, especially Leon Russell's 'A Song For You'.

| | Guillermo Klein Una Nave CD (2005)
La Historia album
$13.85 Keyboardist/guitarist/composer Guillermo Klein's set is certainly wide-ranging. His music includes post-bop soloing, most notably from saxophonist Rodrigo Dominquez and trumpeter Juan Urquiza, some haunting vocalizing, and a few eccentric if catchy rhythmic vamps. Most of the selections are brief, with some being little more than sketches. The singing is fine, although it does not always blend in with the solos, which tend to be more adventurous. The trumpet feature on "La Ultima," which is classical-oriented, is a highlight of this intriguing and unpredictable ...
| | Hanalei Parts And Accessories CD (2006)
La Historia CD music
$12.19 Branching out from the Postal Service-like acoustic guitar plus laptop sound of Hanalei's debut, singer/songwriter Brian Moss built a full band around himself for Parts and Accessories. The change does him good: this is a far more enjoyable and less derivative-sounding album than We Are All Natural Disasters, filled with energetic indie rock songs beholden to no particular subgenre. Hints of alt-country (like the steel guitar parts in "Chamomile" and "Gyres"), Pink Floyd-like space rock (the pleasantly atmospheric "The Hand"), and sardonic power pop ("MLK, You're OK") flit through the songs. Indeed, the least successful tunes are those that hold closest to the style and form of Hanalei's debut, like the heavy-handed closer, "Cynics Anthem for a New Tomorrow." Unfortunately, ...
