WHEELS OF FORTUNE is the Flatlanders' second reunion album, following 2002's NOW AGAIN, and it's the sound of a band finally falling into their groove, more than 30 years after their initial split. NOW AGAIN had arguably been dominated by Jimmie Dale Gilmore's lyrics and vocals, but on WHEELS OF FORTUNE, Gilmore's cohorts Butch Hancock and Joe Ely are more assertive with their own material, offering tracks like the wry country stomp of "I'm Gonna Strangle You Shorty" and the country-rock strut of the opening "Baby Do You Love Me Still." Steve Wesson's musical saw, an integral part of the original Flatlanders sound, makes a most welcome return here, adding that hint of strangeness that's always been a key part of the Flatlanders' mystique.

Rolling Stone (1/22/04, p.72) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "Just one year after their stunning three-decades-in-the-making comeback album, [the Flatlanders are] still riding high....the group's trad-country is crisp and decorous..." Spin (4/04, p.94) - "[T]he tender, playful longing of 'Wishin' For You' is so sublime it hurts..." - Grade: A Entertainment Weekly (1/23/04, pp.100-1) - "WHEELS is near perfection....With jarringly good songs from three different pens, this is country at its elemental best, equals parts whimsy, passion, and revelation." - Rating: A- Q (3/04, p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he old magic is still there on the sublime 'Neon of Nashville' and a reworking of Hancock's 'I Keep Wishin' For You'." Mojo (Publisher) (2/04, p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Guitars glow, characters shine, egos dim. It's Buena Vista Social Club with banjos (and a musical saw)." Wheels Of Fortune album
$14.19 Even by the most lackadaisical release schedule, three decades is a bit of a wait between a group's first and second albums. Of course, this pause in the discography of progressive-country cult heroes the Flatlanders can be explained by the fact that each of the three members spent the time in the middle becoming respected solo singer-songwriters. Still, it sounds like no time passed at all between the posthumously released MORE A LEGEND THAN A BAND and the reunited bliss of NOW AGAIN, as the reunited band's mix of traditional country, Townes Van Zandt-like troubadourism, and cowboy mysticism remains unquestionably intact and vital.
The group's three-part harmonies are employed to maximum effect on the sparkling, '60s-pop-inflected "Julia." "Waving My Heart Goodbye" ...
| | Lucinda Williams World Without Tears CD (2003)
Wheels Of Fortune CD music
$11.99 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Though it's ultimately a less balladic, more stylistically varied album than its dreamy predecessor ESSENCE, WORLD WITHOUT TEARS starts out with a slow-burning, reverb-drenched ballad, but then takes a sharp turn into sensual lyricism, pounding drums, and churning guitar on "Righteously." For some time, the dominant topic of Lucinda Williams albums has been the edgy appeal of dangerous, often doomed men, and true to form there are plenty of those on WORLD ...

Wheels Of Fortune album
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS ...
