Following in Thursday's footsteps, Long Island's Bayside breaks the typecasting of most Victory Records bands by brewing up a palatable batch of aggressive, melodic emo rock that draws on both Jawbox and the Alkaline Trio. Launched with "Masterpiece," which doesn't exactly live up to its title but is really good just the same, frontman Anthony juxtaposes hangovers and heartbreak before the quartet descends into the raw "Poison in My Veins," which also works the lovelorn angle with the finest harmony vocals this side of Midtown. While Bayside's lyrical approach fails to cover any new ground, the group is forceful and adept, whether it's creating a thunderous twin guitar roar on "Alcohol and Altar Boys" or conjuring up poppy, Promise Ring-like numbers like "A Synonym for Acquiesce." While the melodrama gets to be overbearing here and there, it's masked in the bombast of hard, driving tunes like "Kellum." Meanwhile, the quirky somberness of "If You're Bored" might be the most entertaining track of the pack, making Sirens and Condolences a pretty impressive entry. ~ John D. Luerssen

| | Silverstein When Broken Is Easily Fixed CD (2003)
Sirens And Condolences CD music
$9.89 Silverstein's Victory debut is a jarring mixture of emo's earnest determination, elements of hardcore, and the heaviest of heavy metal. While vocalist Shane Told delivers lines like "How can I say I love you back, you never made me happy" in a cracked, soaring singing voice, When Broken Is Easily Fixed actually begins with a ragged scream that's as arresting as his singing is plaintive. Musically, the LP is dominated by the dynamic shifts and driving melodies of emo. But Silverstein's membership was derived from existing hardcore, metal, and punk squads, and these influences are never very far from view. "Last Days of Summer" begins as a June day ends, with shuffling percussion and gently strummed ...

Sirens And Condolences music CDs
$10.69 Spitalfield are back with Remember Right Now, once again posing the musical question, "How melodic can melodic punk get and still reasonably be considered punk?" Of course, the only rational response to that question is "Who cares?," which is why we're not even going to discuss the glockenspiel that keeps popping up on the bridge during "Those Days You Felt Alive." Instead we'll focus on those irresistible ...

| | From First To Last Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Body Count CD (2004)
Sirens And Condolences album
$11.69 Since the early 2000s, what's now known as post-hardcore has been consistently codified into something eminently marketable. Screaming bloody murder over churning angular guitars has suddenly salable qualities, as long as the rage is offset by whimpering pianos and heart-flailing harmonies. This systemization ...
