Prime Of Life Music Review Purchase Prime Of Life CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Lhasa CD (2009)
Prime Of Life album
$13.65 Lhasa's earlier work included arrangements that drew on ranchera and Gypsy music, as well as American, Canadian, and Mexican folk, French chanson, and pop. The international flavor is more subtle on LHASA, without vanishing entirely. The songs on the album all deal with love, usually of the obsessive, hopeless, and doomed variety, and even at her most seductive, as on the subtle rock/tango "The Lonely Spider," Lhasa's vocals hint at grief and despair. The song's Latin standup bassline and subtle chiming guitar combine with a muted tango beat to give the song a deeply ...
| | Bebo & Cigala Lagrimas Negras CD (2004)
Prime Of Life CD music
$8.49 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero Expósito, Ramón Perelló, the grand team of Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, Caetano Veloso ...

| | Claudia Acuna Rhythm Of Life CD (2002)
Prime Of Life CD music
$12.35 Within three years of her initial recording debut as a leader on Wind From the South, vocalist, composer, and arranger Claudia Acuña now commands sufficient respect to produce her second release for a major label, and it's a provocative study, secure in its delicate but powerful Latin jazz relationship. On Rhythm of Life, Acuña virtually has the style mastered and offers a solid, comprehensive, up-to-date exploration of ballads, up-tempo burners, Latin folk, and jazz compositions in English and Spanish. Co-produced by Billy Childs, who also plays piano on four tracks, as well as her longtime friend and pianist Jason Lindner, Claudia Acuña re-styles such great songs as "My Romance," "A Child Is Born," "I Fall in Love Too Easily," and "More Than You Know." Designed to reflect her creativity and original interpretations of standards from the Great American Songbook, she brings each song full circle beautifully, seductively, and in a well-balanced style. "Volver a los Diecisiete," a Chilean song written by Violetta Parra, and Milton Nascimento's "Maria Maria" offer traditional spice to this great set that also features Avi Leibovich playing an awesome flute and trombone. He offers an excellent caliber of jazz improvisations throughout, but is especially emphatic on "Nature Boy." Acuña's nearly six-minute rendition is performed to perfection, opening slowly with her rich trademarked elongations, phrasings, and nuance that rise and fall against Lindner's priceless chords that ebb and flow in a beautiful succession ...
| | Best Of The Springers: Nothing's Too Good For My Baby CD (2002)
Prime Of Life music CDs
$12.89 The Springers didn't have as much personality or distinction as many better-known soul groups from Philadelphia or elsewhere, and some of their recorded efforts were ordinary. Still, groups that are unknown, not major innovators, and not stylistically immediately identifiable can still produce some good sounds. The Best of the Springers: Nothing's Too Good for My Baby (a deceptive title considering that they put out hardly anything and never had hits) can be confidently recommended to anyone who likes good, well-produced '60s Philly soul or is interested in the roots of the sound in which the likes of Thom Bell (who arranged at least some of these cuts) got their feet wet. Of these 16 sides (all recorded in 1965 and 1966), ten tracks (some alternate versions) were previously unissued and six were released on rare singles, though it's unclear from the notes whether these constituted all their official singles. A couple of the catalog numbers in the track listings are attached to just one song, leaving one to wonder whether the B-sides were omitted or these were 45s on which the group was only featured on one side. The rather vague if lengthy interview with ...
