Since the bulk of Jim Croce's discography consists of compilations that shuffle "You Don't Mess Around with Jim," "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "Operator," "Time in a Bottle," and "I Got a Name" in a seemingly endless series of permutations, it's easy to be suspicious of another collection, particularly one bearing the nondescript title Classic Hits. But Classic Hits is from Rhino Records, not a budget label like Disky, and they have put together the first serious Croce hits compilation since 1992's double-disc The 50th Anniversary Collection. That collection, while comprehensive, had limited appeal since only hardcore fans need 49 Croce songs in one compilation, so this is the first noteworthy single-disc compilation since the first Croce hits album, the 1974 LP Photographs & Memories. Every one of the 14 songs on that album is here, but the "Classic Hits" billing doesn't mean all of his charting singles are here -- posthumous minor hit "Chain Gang Medley" is absent. Even so, it's not missed much, and even if there is an album cut or two, such as "Speedball Tucker," that would have been welcome, the 20 songs here contain all of the core Croce canon, along with a good cross-section of album tracks, good liner notes from David Wild, and good sound. Out of all the countless Croce comps on the market, it's easily the best. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With his down to earth, every man persona, Philly born singer-songwriter Jim Croce won legions of fans with a winning mix of soulful vocals, fluid guitar, occasional humor and always colorful storytelling. 21 tracks, including many favorites like "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "Operator", "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" plus the number one pop hits "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Time In A Bottle" which topped the charts posthumously.

Uncut (4/04, p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[H]e popped out airy melodies by the handful, picked guitars sweetly and sang like a blue-collar James Taylor." $12.65 Previous CD, Betty's Room, was released by Rounder in Europe to critical acclaim, this CD is on Bongo Beat worldwide.Produced by John Whynot (Blue Rodeo, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Bruce Cockburn, Colin Linden, Sue Foley, Kathleen Edwards, Lucinda Williams, etc)Co-written & guitars by Andy McLean (The Tenants, Double Dare, Intrepid Records, NXNE)Musicians on the cd have played with Jann Arden, Sarah Harmer, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings, etc..BIOLinda McLean lives in Northern Ontario; a rough-hewn Lucinda Williams, with taut songs full of fire and emotion not easily forgotten. Her debut (Betty's Room) was distributed by Rounder Europe to critical success (it is not available in North America at the moment, maybe on Bongo Beat next year). Now, with her new album, we're proud to introduce this great Canadian roots artist to North America and beyond. Produced by roots veteran John Whynot (Bruce Cockburn, Blue Rodeo, etc), No Language is an impressive showcase of strong songs and emotive singing. There has been a lot of love and attention paid to craft and feeling; recorded deep in the Muskoka woods at Linda's home studio (that lake she's swimming in on the cover is her back yard) with ...

| | Roger Daltrey Daltrey CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Classic Hits Of Jim Croce
$12.65 Although Roger Daltrey was by no means the first member of the Who to take the solo plunge (both John Entwistle and Pete Townshend beat him to the punch), he was the first to make any kind of commercial impact. While "Giving It All Away" peeled off his self-titled debut album to hit the U.K. Top Five, the album itself went Top 50 in America and, almost as an afterthought, introduced the writing talents of the young and then-unknown Leo Sayer to the public at large. Eight months ahead of his own breakthrough hit, "The Show Must Go On," Sayer and writing partner Dave Courtney composed eight of Daltrey's ten tracks; Courtney co-produced the album with Adam Faith, then wrote the remaining pair with Faith himself. Of Sayer's contributions, both "Giving It All Away" and the opening "One Man Band" would subsequently reappear on his own Just a Boy album, itself titled for the chorus line of "Giving It All Away." Daltrey's majestically plaintive rendition remains the definitive version, however, all the more so when linked with the "It's a Hard Life" lament that serves as prelude to the song on Daltrey. Far from the rocking bombast for which the Who were traditionally renowned, but far, too, from the somewhat maudlin melancholy ...
