4 stars Suchet and Hickson are the essence of Christie
David Suchet and Joan Hickson capture the spirit of the times and the genre as Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple respectively. The production values in both these series are high, with close attention to detail - speech, mannerisms and social mores - adding to the richness of the viewing experience. The plots remain - as ever - secondary to the characters. But, beware, you cannot view these DVDs in Australia - the regional "thing" applies. Very disappointing.

Diamanda Galas, who has been known for both her own work and as a singer of extremely demanding modern scores, created this heart-wrenching cry about the physical suffering caused by the AIDS plague being compounded by the shameful arrogance of self-appointed moralists. Maintaining an incredible intensity and depth for over an hour's solo vocal (recorded live at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC, with suitably minimal band and electronics backup), Galas proceeds through Mahalia Jackson-influenced spiritual singing, saxophone-like wails, to dramatic dialogues in many dialects and languages ("there are no more tickets to the funeral") to engrossing Portuguese fado singing to taking on the attributes of Satan (in "Sono L'Antichristo," "I Am the Anti-Christ") in order to challenge the concept of a vengeful, instead of compassionate deity (and society), much as Nina Simone did in her controversial song "God Is a Killer" in the '60s. Krisiun is not a band that puts a lot of emphasis on experimenting or on trying to achieve a radically original sound. Instead, they just keep on honing their attack, focusing on making their music even faster and heavier (to the narrow extent that that is possible). Conquerors of Armageddon is their third official album, and it is basically just a bigger and (arguably) better version of what you hear on their first two: Morbid Angel-influenced death metal that overflows with blasting drumbeats, guttural guitar/bass riffs, growled-out vocals, and completely over-the-top guitar solos. For those keeping score, this album may not be quite as fast as Black Force Domain, their official debut, but it's still extremely fast.
