Standard Screen; Additional Footage; English Subtitles The debut film effort from celebrity horror director Dario Argento's daughter, Asia Argento, SCARLET DIVA is a rambunctious, egocentric vanity project shot on digital video. The sassy and erotic Argento conjures a meandering and brashly compelling world of violence, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, with herself at the center playing an alter ego, Anna Battista. Following Battista, a celebrated and debauched actress, through her breakneck adventures, the crisply photographed film evokes the fast cut style of music videos. As the wildly inventive plot veers towards the fantastical, Argento shines as the hard living Battista who withstands myriad sexual liaisons, pesky adoration from fans and award ceremonies, lecherous producers and the heartbreak of being abandoned by a drug addicted rock star whose baby she is carrying. The futuristic urban soap opera inventively melds satire, melodrama, and fantasy film to create a highly personal and visionary narrative that reflects the disintegrating boundaries of media and morals heralded by the arrival of the 21st Century. Theatrical release: August 9, 2002 (NY)

Scarlet Diva review
$15.65 Luchino Visconti utilized striking cinematography and a precise narrative in his adaptation of Thomas Mann's DEATH IN VENICE. The filmmaker was known for
his deliberate, masterly work in films that delved deeply into a significant historical era or figure.
The story follows the sickly composer, Gustav von Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde), who arrives in Venice by steamboat from Munich. He is deeply distracted, nervous, uncomfortable, and conflicted. Nonetheless, he settles into a breathtaking seaside resort, where he fixates on Tadzio (Bjorn Andresen), an angelic blond Polish boy who is there with his family. While flashbacks to happy times spent with his wife and small daughter fill in some of the blanks of Aschenbach's personal past, others recall his harsh and competitive friend, Alfred (Mark Burns), who criticized Aschenbach's
music for being too technically perfect and thus lacking in beauty and passion.
Via these glimpses into the past, we see that Aschenbach feels defeated in both his personal and his professional lives.
The film uses very little dialogue, relying largely on the characters' facial expressions to communicate the protagonist's tortured ...

$19.95 KUNG FU HUSTLE: Stephen Chow's follow-up to SHAOLIN SOCCER ups the over-the-top action quotient by about three zillion percent. The story is set in 1930s Hong Kong, with Chow as a shaggy-haired, would-be bad guy named Sing, who gets caught up in the middle of a war between the top-hat-wearing Axe gang and the hard scrabble inhabitants of Pig Sty Alley. Chow--who wrote, produced, and directed--doesn't step in as the star here for quite a while, letting the comic duties fly in a myriad of directions: a landlady in curlers (Yuen Qiu) has a yell that can flatten buildings; people get kicked across courtyards and through walls; musician assassins whip ghost sabers from lyre strings, and a mental patient in pink flip-flops named "the Beast" (Leung Siu Lung) catches bullets in his fingers. Buoyed by SOCCER's box office success, HUSTLE uses bigger production values and a dizzying amount of CGI-enhanced martial arts (imagine Bruce Lee vs. Bugs Bunny in THE MATRIX). It's full of references to other films and filmmakers, revering spaghetti westerns and '70s Shaw brothers movies a la Tarantino's KILL BILL (fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping worked on both films). It also pays sly homage to the works of Wong Kar Wai, D.W. Griffith, Sam Raimi, Jean-Luc Godard, Stanley Kubrick, and Akira Kurosawa. Raymond Wong's inspired score matches each cinematic reference with the appropriate cue as the camera circles and swoops around the sprawling sets. This is a real treat, more than a great action film or comedy, it's a great film period, and one that set box office records in the East.
THE MEDALLION: Jackie Chan is back in action with THE MEDALLION, yet another fast-paced martial arts action-comedy. Chan plays Eddie Yang, a Hong Kong cop who is working with Interpol officer Arthur Watson (Lee Evans) in order to protect a gifted young child. Aware that the child holds a centuries-old medallion that could give him limitless powers, Snakehead (Julian Sands) and his band of criminals kidnap the child and head for Dublin. It isn't long before Eddie arrives in Ireland where he is teamed up with beautiful ...

$9.59 Set in early 1980s Apartheid-era South Africa, CATCH A FIRE is a gripping political thriller based on a remarkable true story. Derek Luke (ANTWONE FISHER) stars as Patrick Chamusso, a family man who works as a foreman at the Secunda oil refinery. Although he tries his best to stay out of politics, he is dragged in when Colonel Nic Vos (Tim Robbins) wrongly believes that Chamusso is a prime suspect in a terrorist bombing that occurred at the plant. Despite being brutally beaten and tortured, Chamusso continues to declare his innocence, but the situation changes drastically when the Police Security Branch brings in his wife, Precious (Bonnie Henna). Faced with some hard choices, Chamusso starts listening to radio broadcasts by the illegal African National Congress, an organization of freedom fighters seeking to end apartheid, and decides it's finally time to fight back. Vos and Chamusso, both dedicated to their families as well as to their very different causes, play a relentless game of cat and mouse, symbols of the intense battle between blacks and whites that blew up in horrific violence right before apartheid ended.
