This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Zakk Wylde (vocals, guitar); Corey Taylor, Patrick Lachman (vocals); Diamond Darrell (guitar); Vinnie Paul (drums). Audio Mixer: Sterling Winfield. Recording information: Chasin' Jason Studios; Marshall Sound Design, Dallas, TX. Photographer: Joe Giron. Post-Pantera, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul have hooked up with bassist Bob Zilla (aka Bob Kakaha) and vocalist Pat Lachman (Diesel Machine, Halford) for Damageplan, a shaped charge packed with the shrapnel of 21st century metal. Using Dime and Vinnie's infamously gluttonous groove as an adhesive, New Found Power plows through a mostly entertaining aggro-metal slag heap of berserk thrash workouts and melodic post-grunge, the style pile topped with the rusted-out hunks of death and trad-metal. (Underscoring the latter, Zakk Wylde's wind-whipping gonzo solos appear on two tracks). Previously known only as a guitarist, Lachman turns out to be a pretty strong frontman. He matches wits ably with Dimebag's spiky guitar woops during the opening jab and hook of "Wake Up" and "Breathing New Life," and really hits his stride with the galloping double bass and ripping, Deftones-style screed of the title track. "New Found Power" seems to be the new configuration's mantra, as Lachman bellows "It's time to rip the chain from your neck/Let go the past as you purge" with scary conviction. Damageplan seems especially determined to loosen the irons that bind them to the Pantera anvil, as New Found Power continually plays its more pummeling side of tracks that reference the tried and true plod of grunge, or that movement's post-millennial residue. The introspective "Pride" and half-time shred of "Moment of Truth" reach all the way back to early-'90s Seattle, while "Save Me" and "Blink of an Eye" represent that sound as it exists in the present, marrying tortured soul searching to slight touches of electronic programming and hard-hitting, but ultimately simplistic riffs. Damageplan's seething intensity never falters, from New Found Power's explosive cover art to the album's punishing production. But the smash 'n' grab stylistics of cuts like "Blunt Force Trauma," and the aforementioned "Pride" push them pretty close to the increasingly homogenous post-grunge pack. Fortunately, New Found Power never slips over that precipice. There's too much solid material here, from the bone-snapping metalcore of "Fuck You" (with Slipknot's Corey Taylor helping out), to "Explode," which features some of Dimebag and Vinnie's strongest collaborative work. Damageplan has a bit of jelling to do, but that should come with touring. In the meantime, New Found Power is a blazing new beginning. ~ Johnny Loftus The demise of Pantera reverberated deeply in the hearts and minds of heavy music fans. From the ashes of a very public split with vocalist Phil Anselmo, brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul took solace in a simple mantra--new found power. The duo set out to build a new band in that very spirit as a vehicle for Darrell's trademark blistering riffs and Paul's precision skin-bashing. Initially flying under the flag New Found Power, the band added bassist and fellow Texan Bob Zilla and became known as Damageplan. Former Halford guitarist Pat Lachman makes his vocal debut on NEW FOUND POWER. The result is a study in extremes that spans the horizon from borderline death-metal vocals ("Reborn") to clean melodic singing ("Save Me"). Pantera fans may hear echoes of their beloved band's heyday in the thrashy abandCMJ (2/9/04, p.18) - "[Guitarist Dimebag Darrell] shifts his signature style on NEW FOUND POWER....Damageplan will easily excite metal fans from the '80s, '90s, and the new millennium..." untimely end to a new legacy This is an increadable cd, one of the best in 04. The riffs on the new songs are amazing and Pat Lachman has a great voice, probably more versatile than Phil Anselmo. He has the ability to scream, roar, and sing melodically. A few personal highlights from the cd are New Found Power (wicked chorus), Re-Born, the first single Save Me. This cd will certainly not disappoint. I was looking forward to a long music history with this band in the comming years but it was tragically cut short through the senless violence of one individual. I saw DamagePlan in concert in June 04 and I can still see Dime playing his "steel" guitar on stage. It is a horrible loss to all lovers of great music. If you fear it's not as good as Pantera, fear no more! I think it's better - give it a try. Submitted by Ed (Bonshaw, PE, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

New Found Power
$11.99 Personnel: Ilya Toshinsky (acoustic guitar, banjo); Steven Sheehan (acoustic guitar); Jerry McPherson, Kenny Greenberg, Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (dobro); Randy Scruggs (banjo); Aubrey Haynie (mandolin, fiddle); John Catchings, Kristin Wilkinson, Mary Kathryn Van Osdale, David Angell (strings); Dave Koz (saxophone); Steve Nathan (piano, keyboards); Charles Judge (synthesizer, programming); Chris McHugh (drums); Jim Hoke (Jew's harp); Eric Darken, Arthur Thompson (percussion); Angela Primm, Perry Coleman, Gayle Mayes (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Mills Logan. With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's ...
| | Metallica Ride The Lightning CD (1984)
New Found Power
$14.79 Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark in Spring 1984. Kill 'Em All may have revitalized heavy metal's underground, but Ride the Lightning was even more stunning, exhibiting staggering musical growth and boldly charting new directions that would affect heavy metal for years to come. Incredibly ambitious for a one-year-later sophomore effort, Ride the Lightning finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. Every track tries something new, and every musical experiment succeeds mightily. The lyrics push into new territory as well -- more personal, more socially conscious, less metal posturing. But the true heart of Ride the Lightning lies in its rich musical imagination. There are extended, progressive epics; tight, concise groove-rockers; thrashers that blow anything on Kill 'Em All out of the water, both in their urgency and the barest hints of melody that have been added to the choruses. Some innovations are flourishes that add important bits of color, like the lilting, pseudo-classical intro to the furious "Fight Fire with ...
| | Black Sabbath Master Of Reality CD (1971)
New Found Power
$8.95 Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass instrument); Bill Ward (drums). With Paranoid, Black Sabbath perfected the formula for their lumbering heavy metal. On its follow-up, Master of Reality, the group merely repeated the formula, setting the stage for a career of recycling the same sounds and riffs. But on Master of Reality Sabbath still were fresh and had a seemingly endless supply of crushingly heavy riffs to bludgeon their audiences into sweet, willing oblivion. If the album is a showcase for anyone, it is Tony Iommi, who keeps the album afloat with a series of slow, loud riffs, the best of which -- "Sweet Leaf" and "Children of the Grave" among them -- rank among his finest playing. Taken in tandem with the more consistent Paranoid, Master of Reality forms the core of Sabbath's canon. There ...

$24.95 Dissection: Jon Nodtveidt (vocals, electric & acoustic guitars); Johan Norman (guitar); Peter Palmdahl (bass); Ole Ohman (drums). Additional personnel: Legion, It (background vocals). Recorded between March 17 and March 30, 1995. All songs written or co-written by Jon Nodtveidt except "No Dreams Breed In Breathless Sleep" (Alexandra Balogh). On their final full-length album, Dissection further refines their brand of icy black/death metal with impressive and frightening results. The guitars, with their gloomy minor-key riffs and intentionally blurred tones, feel like a cold wind on the permafrost. The drums are speedy, intricate, and precise, while frontman Jon Nodtveidt's vocals -- delivered in an evil, mid-range rasp -- top off what amounts to just a nightmarishly dark sound. To put it another way, ...
