Joanna Newsom plays the harp, looks like an elf princess, and sings in a squeaky child-like voice, all of which contribute to her unique charm. Like her pal and frequent collaborator Devendra Banhart, she's also a shining light of the early 2000s neo-folk movement, which bonds quirky wordplay and fuzzy eccentricity with a deep reverence for authentic rural folk.
Whether accompanying herself on harp, harpsichord, or piano, Newsom plunges into the archaic depths of American roots music and cherry-picks the most heartbreaking passages, weaving everything together with lyrics of shockingly formal eloquence that present dense poetic imagery in the vein of BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME-era Dylan. Songs like "Sprout and the Bean," "Peach, Plum, Pear," and "Sadie" weave enough elaborate visions for a dozen ballads, adding something more than the expected folksy tweeness. Throughout THE MILK-EYED MENDER, Newsom's lulling harp and odd vocalizing combine to create something utterly original, yet deeply familiar, standing firm at the crossroads between outsider art and genuine brilliance.

Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Over and above her gorgeous, spare arrangements for harp, piano and harpsichord, it's Joanna Newsom's voice that really steals the show....This is a weird, dark record." An Individual Talent This a stunning piece of work intricate, exquisite and totally beguiling. Joanna's voice wont be to everybodies taste, dont expect Sandy Denny or Shirley Collins. Its quite unique and has the quality of a willful awe struck child at times. The instrumentation is nothing short of breathtaking especially her harp playing Lyrically complex, occasionally dark The Milk-Eyed Mender comes highly recommended. strange and different and wonderful I was watching the Austin Music Network late one night and they showed a video by an elfish harp player with an odd singing voice. The song being played in the video was "Sprout and the Bean" by Joanna Newsom. I quickly wrote her name down so I wouldn't forget it. The next day I went to this site to listen to samples. To my joy, I found out that I still liked her music. I was afraid that my lowered awareness from being incredibly tired the night before might have had something to do with my being so intrigued. Newsom has one of the most unique singing voices I've ever heard, child-like and straightforward, yet strangely beautiful. Newsom appears to be part of an emerging movement of lo-fi folk and folk-rock that I for one welcome with open arms. By the way, I only give the album 4 stars because I've only listened to samples so I can't make a final and completely accurate judgement until I hear the whole thing. An enigma Not unlike Jonny cash's oaklike voice Joanna newsom seems to be beyond her 23 years of age. A 12 song set of autumny, strange and beguiling songs which leaves the listener in a warm blanket of newsom's eerie yet comforting voice. An interesting and captivating debut. worth investigation Submitted by th_yorke (kopenga, sweden) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The new Kate Bush??? Newsom's voice is trul unique.. there is a rasping quality to it, but one that is controlled into a melodic overture!!
This is a VIRTUOSO debut and one that deserves merit and mention.
The pick of the bunch for me is Peach, Plum, Pear. A sublime piece of work featuring a pounding organ, sublime vocal echoes (which absolutely remind me of Kate Bush at the height of her powers) and great use of her own voice to provide echo'd backing vocals.
A superb collection of what I am sure will be considered a classic album by a tremendous new talent!
